I am a newbie in this area, but have graduate level background in statistics, probability, data mining, etc. Could somebody recommend good books (for basic self-learning or with up-to-date details) in area of speech recognition? Thank you in advance.

Start with following paper available on web:
"A tutorial on Hidden Markov Models and Selected Applications in Speech Recognition" by Lawrence R. Rabiner
Then look for on-line slides for course CS224S/Linguist 281 By Dan Jurafsky.
Then graduate to following books:
"Speech and Language processing" by Dan Jurafsy, J.H. Martin
"Fundamentals of Speech Recognition" by Lawrence Rabiner
"Spoken Language processing A guide to theory, Algorithm and system development"
By Xuedong Huang, Alex Acero and Hsiao Wuen Hon
