Meaning of \~ (backslash+tilde) in WSJ transcriptions

    In the WSJ transcription, certain words are in caps preceded by backslash and tilde - For example -
    \~NEW-STORY
    \~CAPITAL
    \~SPELLED

    I read the DOT_SPEC.DOC file but it doesn't describe what the symbols (\~) indicate. Does anyone know what they indicate?

    Those are just special marks to indicate some additional information about the utterance, they are not pronounced, so you can remove them.
