The demos are wonderful. The zipcode thing is particularly cool. However, they only work the first time through.
I've read the posts but did not find a specific fix. Is this a java sound problem? Is this sphinx configuration problem? What actions should I take to proceed?

Moving from Mandrake to Suse did get the program working but again only the first time through.
I then installed Suse on my laptop and everything worked as expected; thus, I decided to put a new sound card in the desktop and see if that fixed the problem and Voila! it did. The new soundcard fixed the problem even though the old sound card was completely functional for recording and playing back recording in Audacity and other sound programs. Sphinx still does not work under Mandrake.
As I see it, the moral of the story is if you are having installation problems with linux:
A: suse is the best choice
B: Try reconfiguring your sound card
C: You may need to install a new sound card even if the card is otherwise fully functional.
Now onto working out how to integrate this into my medical records program.
