Help unable to set volume for speech input

Hello,
sorry for this very dummy posting.
But I really need some help!!

I am trying to set up sphinx4 and run the demos on linux ubuntu draper.

The Audiotool works fine, it records and play input speech, but when I come to run the demos, the system does not recognise anything I say.

I cannot understand how to set the volume settings of the volume control to have it work.

Can anybody help me?
