FATAL_ERROR running pocketsphinx_continuous

Help

  • Bishwadeep Sen Gupta

    Hi,
I am using Ubuntu Maverick. I am done with the initial installation steps for
SphinxBase & PocketSphinx. But when I try to run the pocketsphinx_continuous
command to test the installation, I am getting the below error.

    INFO: continuous.c(367): pocketsphinx_continuous COMPILED ON: Dec 16 2011, AT:
    23:40:59

ad_oss.c(103): Failed to open audio device(/dev/dsp): No such file or
    directory
FATAL_ERROR: "continuous.c", line 242: Failed top open audio device

Can you please help me with this. I have been struggling with it for quite
some time now. I also tried installing other configurations of audio available
for Ubuntu, but that made matters worse. I had to uninstall the foreign
configuration & had to restore my original audio settings. So I am back on
    square one.

You need to install oss-compat package to ensure OSS compatiblity

    http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/oss-
    compat

  • Bishwadeep Sen Gupta

    Hi Nick,

    Thanks for the info.
The OSS compatibility package installed successfully, but the problem
    persists. Any other way out?

  • Nickolay V. Shmyrev

    reboot?

    Hi Nick,

Hope you are good. Sorry Couldn't revert back to you earlier.

Same problem persists even after reboot.

So that you can just check whether everything else is fine & as expected.

I even tried recompiling & everything possibly I could, but issue persists. I
looked at the code. Is there any way get rid of it. Also checked the help
Forum is full of issues reported on pocketsphinx_continuous. Is there a
    problem with it?

Hi Nick, Hope you are good. Sorry Couldn't revert back to you earlier.

Sorry, if you want to tell me something, write me a personal mail.

This is hindering any progress for me on implementing pocketsphinx. Having
read the documentation I do not want to implement in on Windows. Please help.

The reciept to solve this problem is the second post in this thread. File is
missing because OSS support is not installed. You can either compile
pocketsphinx with AlsA support by installing alsa development headers and
recompiling or you can install oss-compat package.
