I have a maestro 2e sounds card. I am using the pcm driver in FreeBSD 4.5 stable. I can compile sphinx2 and 3 without errors. When I try to run sphinx-demo and simple they say initializing for a minute them dump me to prompt. I -verbose 9'ed sphinx-continuous in sphinx-simple and it says ad_open_sps failed. What is that? Also, I get some errors about oss. My microphone works and I have set 'mixer 50:50' (if I do 100:100 I get feedback on my laptop onboard mic and yes I tried another mic also.) I have tried tarballs and tried cvs last week.

Do I need OSS to use sphinx? Anyone else running sphinx2 or sphinx3 on FreeBSD? The port has never worked for me on any machine ever.

    Thanks for any help.

I havnt looked in the code yet, but ad_open_sps smacks of Audio Device Open failure. The OSS is Open Sound System drivers. I think at the end of the day, you should concentrate on getting the sound card setup working, such that on bootup, there are no reported problems.

Try using ALSA sound card drivers instead of the freeby OSS ones.

Sorry I didn't mention that my sound card seems to work fine with any other application I have. I have festival 1.4.2 working flawlessly now with the OGI stuff. I can plug in a mic and bust some rhymes through my laptop speakers. I can compile sphinx. I just cannot get it to actually run. I'd really like to get this up and going with open source drivers and tools. I haven't tried on Linux yet.
