Which search types require triphones?

Trying to get a better understanding of the MDEF file structure. Is it true that the triphones are not always used? E.g. Setting "-allphone_ci=true" results in an allphone search where only the ciphones seem to be touched. Right?

Under which circumstances are the triphones never touched?
