I have just started using cmu sphinx and would like to know about the nuts and bolts of the same. Is there any convenient way to understand the source code of cmu sphinx rather than blindly blundering through the javadocs and decompiled jar files. Any suggestion of books on sphinx or text that explains or closely resembles the working of sphinx will be appretiated. And yes i have gone through the tutorials but they only tell u how to use the tool, not how the code underneath works.

This manual is intended for developers who need to apply speech technology in their applications, not for speech recognition researches. Its recommended to start with a textbook on speech technologies in other case. Spoken Language Processing by Acero, Huang and others is a good choice for that.
