The latest version won't support old NIC card:
clonezilla_live_testing/2.4.5-3/clonezilla-live-2.4.5-3-i586.iso
I used it to backup a 32 bit machine, and got:
kernel 4.2.0-1-586?
[ 21.342410] e100 0000:00:08.0: firmware: failed to load e100/d102e_ucode.bin (-2)
[ 21.356247] e100 0000:00:08.0: Direct firmware load for e100/d102e_ucode.bin failed with error -2
Are they non-free software? If so, did you try Clonezilla live 20151207-wily?
http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
It comes with non-free firmware so it might help.

Steven.
Oh, Debian would not include the e100 binary driver!
But the question is the i386 machine don't support PAE, Ubuntu won't start
without it.
