A Dell Optiplex 755 recently came across my desk to image, and I needed to use the latest release (1.0.6-5) of Clonezilla to even get something to BOOT on this machine.  However it doesn't seem to recognize the NIC in this machine.  According to Dell's site, this is the Windows version of the driver: Intel 825xx Gigabit Platform LAN Network Device, Driver, Multi OS, Multi Language, OptiPlex 755, v.9.8.20.0, A00

Of course by multiOS they mean 2k/XP/Vista.

The .INF file in windos has this:
    CatalogFile = e1000325.cat
    DriverVer   = 03/25/2007,8.9.1.0

I forced CZ to load the e1000 driver, but the NIC didn't show up under ifconfig -a.
lspci tells me "Intel Corporation Unknown Device 10bd (Rev 2)"

Has anyone seen this sort of thing and/or know what driver/card or of a way to get it working?

This version of the NIC requires version 7.6.9 of the e1000 module while the LiveCD only has 7.3.20, how can I replace the old module with a new one I've compiled?

        Steven Shiau - 2007-10-18

You can try to copy the 7.6.9 module into Clonezilla live after it boots, then remove the loaded module by "rmmod e1000", and load yours by insmod.
If you want to remaster the live CD, you can try to mount the file /casper/filesystem.squashfs, overwrite the e1000.ko, and pack the new filesystem.squashfs with mksquashfs. Then use mkisofs to create the new iso. You can refer to /opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-iso for more details.
BTW, once kernel 2.6.23 is available in backports.org for Debian Etch, we will use it in Clonezilla live.

I'll look into that, thank you.  This Dell has certainly been an ADVENTURE

      Steven,
Would you mind giving a bit more information about remastering the live CD? I think I roughly understand the steps needed and I tried to do it but it didn't work for me. However, I think it might be because I set up a PC with Fedora 8 ( later kernel than Debian Live) and compiled the e1000.ko file (downloaded 7.6.12 from Intel) on that system. A colleague helped me to use the squashfs tools to unpack and repack filesystem.squashfs and recreate the iso. If my theory is right, how can I make sure that I have an environment that is fully compatible to make the remastered iso work correctly with the Intel 82566 NIC? I was using Clonezilla Live version 1.0.7-18.

      Thanks.

Maybe you can give this one a try:
        http://www.stevenshiau.org/misc/clonezilla/ubuntu-based/clonezilla-live-20071228c.iso
This is a clonezilla live based on Ubuntu 7.10. It might support your NIC.
BTW, this is still in beta status, some bugs are expected.
Please let us know the results.

          Steven,

Can you make this iso available again? I am having the same exact problem with the Intel-based NIC on an HP dc7800.

          Thanks,

          Greg

Let me start by saying a big thank you to you and Jazz for working hard to resolve these issues with newer NICs not being detected. It's very much appreciated.

I downloaded the Ubuntu-based beta version and tested it on four different models of Dell PCs:
Optiplex GX520, GX745, GX755 and Latitude D531. As you may recall, the 755 was the one with the NIC not being detected and I am delighted to say that the new version worked great with that machine. After selecting the option on the initial manual the screen went black for several seconds but it was OK after a while. It seemed slightly quicker than the old version but I have no timings to confirm that. I did notice some spelling mistakes on the Advanced Parameters menu when creating an image (the one where it lets you choose the priority of ntfsclone>partimage>dd???) but that is minor. The new version worked fine for creating and restoring on the 745 and 520 too.
Overall, my impression of the beta was very positive.

Unfortunately, the D531 laptop was another story. The stage where the hardware detection took place never completed and would hang in various different places. I tried two identical machines to make sure it wasn't a hardware problem with the first one. Both were the same. Clonezilla 1.0.7-18 works OK so it wouldn't cause me problems.

I would like to suggest that the first boot menu includes the version number of Clonezilla in future releases.

If I can help with any more information or testing, let me know. Thank you very much indeed for your efforts. :-)

Thanks for your feedbacks and suggestions.
The version number now is shown in the boot menu in the newer version 20071229):
        http://opensource.nchc.org.tw/clonezilla-live/experimental/ubuntu-based/

BTW, when you have some problems in detecting your hardware system, you can try to choose "failsafe mode" to see if it will work or not.
As for the blank screen after booting, it's because of in Ubuntu it takes time to load framebuffer module, and it's different from Debian that vesafb is built-in. If you do care about that, try to use "no framebuffer" mode in the boot menu.

To use Clonezilla 20071229 with these Dell 755s you have to go into the BIOS settings, select Drives > SATA Operation and change the setting from the default of AHCI to ATA. If you don't do this, Clonezilla Live will not load successfully.

If anyone is interested, the new testing version of Clonezilla 1.0.9-1 does NOT detect the NICs in the Dell 755. You have to use the Ubuntu-based one mentioned above.

      • Steven Shiau

        Steven Shiau - 2008-01-08

Yes, this is true. The stable/testing clonezilla now is based on Debian etch with newer kernel.
In the experimental ubuntu-based clonezilla, the working driver for Optiplex 755 NIC is from Ubuntu 7.10 package linux-ubuntu-modules, I guess.
Could you do me a favor, boot Optiplex 755 via clonezilla live, and in command line, run
        lspci > lspci.log
        lspci -n > lspci-n.log
then post these two log files.
        Thanks in advance.

Yes, this PCI ID was confirmed that vanilla kernel 2.6.22-3 does not supported. In Ubuntu 7.10, it's provided by linux-ubuntu-modules:

        ~# grep 8086 /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-386/modules.pcimap  | grep 10bd
        e1000-ich9           0x00008086 0x000010bd 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x0

        ~# modinfo e1000-ich9
        filename:       /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-386/ubuntu/net/e1000-ich9/e1000-ich9.ko
        version:        7.6.5-NAPI
        license:        GPL
        description:    Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver
        author:         Intel Corporation, <linux.nics@intel.com>
        srcversion:     4E8FBF5284E9B9D894EE73A
        ...

        ~# dpkg -S /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-386/ubuntu/net/e1000-ich9/e1000-ich9.ko
        linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-386: /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-386/ubuntu/net/e1000-ich9/e1000-ich9.ko

Therefor only when we switch a newer kernel in testing or stable clonezilla live, this NIC will be supported then. When a newer kernel shows up in www.backports.org/debian, we will use that. In the mean time, please use the ubuntu-based experimental clonezilla live.

I was testing the Ubuntu-based 20080303-hardy version of Clonezilla with a Dell 755. Using the default (1st option) I got some errors -16 after a message about something being slow to respond. I took your advice from a previous post and used the failsafe option. This worked fine but, of course, I could not remove the CD. Only the 'To RAM' option seems to offer that. Is there a way of selecting a combination of options (ie Failsafe AND To RAM) like you can with some Linux live CDs? I need to be able to use a single CD for several PCs because using a DRBL server is not convenient in our environment.

When clonezilla live boot menu shows, you can press tab key to append those parameters. In you case, you can:
      1. Use arrow key to highlight the failsafe menu
      2. Press tab key
      3. append "toram" in the line
Then press enter to boot it.

Some time has passed since the OP got his solution in the 03-03-08 version of the ubuntu based zip.

Has this functionality been built into the more recent versions?

I've got stacks of 755's coming for a massive hardware upgrade project and would hate to get tripped up.

      thanks,

      Christopher,
I have imaged quite a lot of Dell 755s using Clonezilla. You MUST use the Experimental version to get support for the Intel NIC that the 755 uses. I use 20080511-hardy version but I notice from the link that Steve supplied above that have been several newer versions since then. It's up to you which one you use. I would advise you to read my other posts in this thread to see what obstacles I've come across and how they have been solved.
Good luck with your imaging !

Awesome.  the 755's arrived this a.m. and I'm already on my way.  (using 20080511-hardy version)

Thanks a ton guys.  when i saw this thread's title my heart sank a bit but the solutions came so quickly after the original post.

It's stuff like this that makes me happy we didn't blow money on Ghost!

The new 1.2.0-11 and 1.1.0-8 both work on the 755 now if i could get UDPcast to work it would be great

        Steven Shiau - 2008-08-16

        UDPcast ?
UDPcast is used in Clonezilla server edition, not in Clonezilla live. So which one are you using ? Clonezilla server edition or Clonezilla live ?
