computer freezes on boot

i have a bootable disk which works fine on the computer i used to create it with but when i start up the computer with the corrupt hdd it just freezes. usually it freezes at the first grey screen but sometimes at the compaq screen where it says "press esc for start up meny". is this just a case of the disc i want to clone from being too damaged? i know the reason the disc doesnt work is that some sections have failed but i wanted to see if i could recover something from it. i am very grateful for all help.

Not sure if it's hardware issue or not. However, you can try:

1. Try to use testing Clonezilla live, like 2.5.6-12. It comes with newer Linux kernel so it might give you different results.
2. Do a memtest to see if RAM is OK or not.
3. Try the same Clonezilla live on different machine to see if it can boot without any issue. It will help you to isolate the issue.
