Two years back I have created an image backup of my Notebook on an USB 2.0 HDD. Now I try to restore from that Image. I am pretty sure that I use the same Clonezilla Live CD as in 2012. In Clonezilla I can mount the USB HDD and see the directory. However just the one folder with the Image created in 2012 is missing. When booting with Win7 or Knoppix Live cd I can see all folders including the desired one. Any Idea what's going wrong or how to proceed with Troubleshooting.

Please show the files list on the image dir. It's easier to understand if the required files do exist.
BTW, you can use the newer Clonezilla live to restore. We do our best to let the image format be compatible.
