Trashed the source drive

    Hi,
I tried to clone an SSD onto an HDD of the same size today and experienced a few problems:

    1) While cloning, Partclone went into an infinite loop on one of the partitions, running over and over. There appeared to be some sort of error at the end of the operation and then it would start over. I aborted it on the third attempt. After the entire process finished I was able to boot from the clone and it appeared to be intact.
    2) When I attempted to boot from the original source drive the boot failed with nothing but a flashing cursor.

    Details:

    • Clonezilla 2.7.3-19 stable installed as an ISO on a 16GB USB flash using Balena etcher. Appeared to start up properly and behaved as I expected.
    • Intel i5 Asrock MB 24GB RAM
    • Source drive is Samsung EVO 860 1TB SSD with Fedora 32 (LVM) installed
    • Dest drive is WD 1TB HDD

I've done this operation many times before with Clonezilla 2.3.xx on a Live CD without problems - on this same system, with these same drives.

Since the clone drive appears to be OK and I have good backups I haven't lost anything except time, but I thought it would be helpful to let you know.

    Thanks for your feedback.
Is this issue reproducible if you use Clonezilla live 20210817-hirsute? Or the older versions of Clonezilla live, e.g., 2.7.2-39? Not so old like version 2.3.

      Thanks for getting back.
I haven't had time to pursue this further - at the moment I'm just trying to get my system working again. When the dust settles I may try again with the versions you suggested.

      Eric
