Hello, I am using clonezilla live clonezilla-live-2.3.1-18-amd64.iso from a usb stick. I am tring to clone a drive. I select device to device and local drive to local drive. There is only one hard drive on the system. The list comes up to select the source drive and my drive is listed there. When I select the drive, I get an error message that the drive is not found. How can it not be found if it appears in the list? I don't see how it could be mounted. The error messages says something about the possibility of the kernel being too old. This it the most recent clonezilla, so I don't see how that could be the problem either. Should I be using the i686 version of clonezilla instead of the amd64 version? Is there some other problem here. This is about as straight forward a clonezilla operation as you can do, so it's hard to see what could be going wrong.

When I try to do device to image, I get to the screen where you specify the mount location for the repository where the image will be saved or restored from. I plug in my external usb drive to the usb port and two messages appear.

    The messages are,
    No caching mode page found
    assuming drive cache: write through

When I key enter, the list of available drive appears, but my external usb drive is not on the list. At this point, clonezilla will not recognize my installed internal hard drive or my external usb drive. This makes clonezilla more or less a paperweight on my desk. I have used clonezilla for years and don't ever remember having a problem with it, including the use of usb drives.

This is a 1366 asus sabertooth motherboard if that matters.

Well I decided to install an esata connector and hook up the external drive with esata instead of usb and things seem to be working. When I get to the screen where I select the source device to clone there are two devices showing, the internal hdd and my external hdd. When I select the internal drive, everything goes fine and I don't get the "drive not found" error.

I ran the usb stick out of a usb 2 port this time. I tried that before so I don't know if that had anything to do with the issue or not. Possibly there need to be at least two devices on the list for things to work, since you are making a copy of one drive to another?

Do you know if your device is supported by any version of GNU/Linux?
BTW, maybe give clonezilla live 20150119-vivid a try:
    http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
It comes with Linux kernel 3.18 so the results might be different.

    Steven.
