I am sorry. This is a bug in CLISP: (lisp:socket-stream nil) was not the same as (lisp:socket-stream). I fixed that in the CVS some time ago, but it was after 2000-03-06 was released. You will have to get the development version from ftp://cellar.goems.com/pub/clisp (I even have redhat 5.2 and solaris 2.5.1 binaries there).
