You can check using 'gitk' or 'git log' whether there have been
recent updates.

Yes, you can build in a git checkout (or a subdirectory thereof).

No, the hg repository is abandoned. I now added a file
'00_REPOSITORY_HAS_MOVED' to clarify this.
