try (probe-directory "./")

PROBE-DIRECTORY & PROBE-FILE are broken wrt symbolic links to
directories to the point of being completely useless.
I use DIRECTORY instead (and still have to do some idiotic jumping
around - appending and/or removing "/" &c)
