I'm currently deep into translating defs1.lisp (specifically the time
and date reckoning code), and not only are the comments in German, but
so are most of the variable and function names. Especially in some
places where actual comments are sparse, anyone who didn't know what
the German names meant would be in the dark trying to read it.
Should I attempt to convert the function and variable names over to
English as well (with appropriate care taken to ensure that nothing
breaks), or should I leave them as they are, perhaps with extra
comments giving the English meanings as needed?

I haven't got any say in the matter, but here's my thoughts
It would definitely be nice to have the functions and variables
translated. Sometimes it's difficult to choose good names
(literal is not likely to do it) so perhaps you could post the
list of renamings here for people to look over, when it's ready?
Though I suppose we could just read your patch.
