I think/hope that nfog is continuing the development for the standalone mplayer plugin/patch.
But for now you are best off visiting the unichrome project.

They have an Xfree86/Xorg driver and an mplayer patch that doesn't require root rights (thanks to the XMVC layer)

A new patch for mplayer-1.0pre5 has been put into cvs, containing the latest development. Soon we should have the first moving video.
I uploaded the CVS files, they should be available in (max) 24 hours.
You might need to do an 'update -P' after the first checkout to remove 2 directories that aren't used.
Note: The uploaded files (in src) are the same files that the patch gives you.
Added: 'Makefile' and 'configure' to show how '--enable-cle266' was implemented.
