What shadows are you talking about?

the border of the start menu has a shadow around it

It shows the shadow like any other window. You can disable it from the system
settings:
System Properties -> Advanced -> Performance. Then uncheck "Show shadows under
windows".

Version 3.5.0 of Classic Shell has an option to enable/disable the shadows.
