Administrator Tool

One of the dangers facing a database is having incomplete or erroneous information loaded into it. Loading operations should only be done by those who are trained on how to properly follow the protocols.
The CIERA Administrator tool allows system administrator to assing read only or read/write access to the database.

Setting Access

Next to each CIERA user's entry are 4 radio buttons:

  • Read-only Access: the user can look up pedigree, phenotypic and genotypic data but cannot add/edit/delete any information.
  • Read/Write Access To All: the user can load/edit/delete any data in the system.
  • Read/Write Access to Pedigree Data Only: user can only load pedigree information to CIERA.
  • Read/Write Access to Phenotypic Data Only: user can only load phenotypic and pedigree data to CIERA.
  • Read/Write Access to Genotypic Data Only: user can only load genotypic and pedigree data to CIERA.
  • Administrator Access: the user can not only load/edit/delete any data within CIERA, they can also assign access to other users. Only a very few should have these permissions, and they should coordinate with each other.
  • Pause Access: This option will not allow the user access to CIERA. Use this for temporary suspensions of account, such as someone on leave or on term contracts and may have breaks in their service.

Pedigree data needs to be loaded for both phenotypic and genotypic datasets, therefore Pedigree data access is inheritanly given when access is granted to those data groups.

Caution

Giving access to the CIERA database means that user can make serious changes to the information, so it should not be given out without proper training and discussion with the team lead and other CIERA administrators. The addage "Too many cooks spoil the broth" can be applied here. Corruption of a database does not normally happen overnight, but rather over months of incorrect data being uploaded, changed or deleted. Once discovered, it can be a painstaking process to recover. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is for read/write access to be given to only those who are taking it seriously, otherwise it might be better to just have the administrators load the data for them.
