I know this is an exhausted topic, but the answers change a lot. Basically, I have a buddy who is going to have an ecommerce site and I would like to develop it in php5. To start out with, I'd like to go with a cheaper company since the traffic will be low and he'll be on a budget until it kicks off, but I don't want to go with godaddy - so need something that is more reliable but easy to work with and developer friendly (the more configurations I can control the better). Any suggestions? Also, a company that he can keep as his business grows and needs more bandwidth/etc... would be preferable. I think to start it should be $25/month or under. |

I'm pretty sure the same recruiter contacted me. As did about 10,000 others - putting your resume on careersurf will do that. I'd only contact the recruiters that are at least professional if I was you. Also, if you want to build up your portfolio, you might want to check out some temp work. I just spent a short stint unemployed and had very good luck with creative circle. Overall, they are a good temp company with decent wages, you can pick what you want to do, and if you are good with css/javascript on top of some php you're golden. That said, started my new perm job today (found by myself, recruiters were jerks to deal with so I didn't really bother with that route) and LOVE IT. Just wanted to put that out there! Good luck with your search, there is a lot of need for php in the city so I'm sure you'll do fine. Sure, but consider the amount of hassle and the communication barrier he's going to face if he takes that job. Probably not worth it. And is it too much to ask for a web dev company's website to look relevant and maintained? On Jul 15, 2008, at 15:19 , John D. Hello, I realize this is blatant self-promotion, but hopefully it won't ruin anyone's day... In case anyone is interested, I've recently published a book that's pretty directly related to PHP, as well as issues of programming, intellectual property, and computer security and privacy. It's called "Authoritas: One Student's Harvard Admissions and the Founding of the Facebook Era," and it talks about the complex and mostly unknown story of Facebook's birth. As you may know, Facebook is based on PHP and MySQL, as was houseSYSTEM's Universal Face Book, the site that preceded it at Harvard. The book has a site here: http://www.aarongreenspan.com/authoritas.html and if you're interested in reading the first few pages, you can on the Interbook site for it here: http://www.thinkpress.com/authoritas/index.html The Interbook site also features the actual documents used to write the book (which are linked page-by-page) such as e-mails and IMs with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook, Inc.'s present CEO, Apache logs, letters to and from the Harvard administration, etc. Both sites are written in PHP (of course!) on the Lampshade framework. If you want, you can buy the book through any of the places listed on the Order page. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or comments.
