Hello Members We are currently conducting a study that aims to optimise User Experience (UX) in the development processes of Free and Open-source software (FOSS), including ChessX. This study believes that delivering projects of this nature with desirable UX is an organisational effort. Therefore, precisely comprehending what make FOSS projects with desirable UX, integrating them in the development processes, and optimally assessing these processes are mandatory. UX is still ambiguous and what create several FOSS projects with desirable UX are still unknown. Moreover, although these projects offer immense contributions, they are not widely adopted, and UX is recurring as the significant cause of ongoing adoptions misfortune. The FOSS community has not done enough to address these challenges. Therefore, to dig deeper into this problem, we have developed a questionnaire with several UX influencing factors seeking FOSS stakeholders' perceptions. The developed questionnaire provides evidence rather than opinions when capturing insights into how stakeholders in the FOSS community perceive UX influencing factors. Furthermore, it is the derivative of several psychometric scales, such as AttrakDiff, VisAWI, SUS, UEQ, meCUE, and reviewed literature. We kindly request that the network feel free and offer candid feedback by completing the appraisal in the link shown below. https://forms.gle/rzLcEwj3LpPkci3p7 -- | Phesto P Namayal | P.O. Thanks for responding to my email. Let me clarify a few things from my last email. The issue was that text in a move comment displayed in angle brackets was not displayed in the game browser. 1. These are not XML tags. They are also not HTML tags. This is ordinary ASCII text in which some strings are enclosed in angle brackets. They should be displayed like any other ASCII text comment. It is clear these cannot be HTML or XML tags. For one thing, there is no end tag! 2. I did not mean to suggest that CQL is embedded into a comment. CQL is distributed with a sample PGN database, used in the CQL examples for documentation. The sample database CQL uses in its documentation can be downloaded here: http://www.gadycosteff.com/cql/pgn/sample.pgn . That PGN file (mainly excerpts from the Heijden database) has examples of comments containing angle brackets. To clarify, my request is this: display the text of a comment. (Obviously, if ChessX makes exception for text enclosed in HTML tags, that is fine. That does not apply in this case. These strings are obviously not HTML and so they should be displayed as normal text). I believe this is the intent of the PGN specification, which allows ASCII text in comments. The Heijden PGN database has been under development for over 20 years and displays fine in ChessBase, HiArcs and probably others. We do not want a situation where a conformant, ASCII, PGN file looks fine in some PGN viewers but in which comments are invisible in other PGN viewers. That is confusing for users and database creators. We are correctly handling XML- and HTML-Tags, for example <i>Important move</i>. But this is probably the problem - you have your own XML-Tags inside comments which should trigger different behaviour. For my understanding: what is the idea of embedding CQL into a comment? Should ChessX trigger a CQL-Query once it finds such a comment, for example, when displaying a move with a CQL-command, display a button which executes the command? I can’t see any samples on the Heidjen study database - what tags is Heidjen using and which intention does this database have with XML? BTW: the comment editor below the board shows the <thisshoulddisplay> tag, only the game browser does not show it. We are currently redesigning the game browser, so changes might be coming! A PGN move comment like {<foo>} is not displayed by ChessX ([MacOS]). Instead, a comment with text "<foo>" should be displayed. Correctly handling such comments is important for some PGN databases. For example, the Heijden study database, a collection of 85000 endgame studies in PGN, relies extensively on such comments for annotations. See http://hhdbv.nl/ . Some CQL examples use these tags as well, http://www.gadycosteff.com/cql . Do you know if or when this will be fixed, or if there is a workaround? A sample game illustrating this is below: [Event "chessx tag bug"] [Site "?"] [Date "2020.07.14"] [White "Bug1"] [Black "Bug2"] [EventDate "2011.??.??"] 1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 {<thisshoulddisplay>} 1-0 |

Hello Jens, My name is Eugene and I'd like to contribute to chessx. In a long run I'm aiming to add binary format support, but plan to start with some more lower hanging fruits. For a start I've been able to implement read-only access to Scid's binary database (.si4) by reusing the code from the Scid itself (can be found at https://sourceforge.net/p/scid/code/ci/master/tree/ --- it turns out that the project is pretty active now, got unit tests for cpp code, CD scripts for making builds in the cloud, etc). I don't think si4 should be the ultimate chessx format, but it is used by some databases for distribution (e.g. caissabase), so I guess it'd be nice to have at least read support for it. I've also got a few organisational suggestions: 1) switch to git for SCM It's a de-facto standard nowadays, makes much easier both collaboration and hacking on a project locally; finally sourceforge does support it and it is possible to convert an entire history from svn repository to git. 2) use github (or gitlab/bitbucket) for development. IMO they are much more user-friendly for cooperation. An immediately useful feature would be a pull-request flow: you'll be able to review and discuss proposed changes in a single thread before accepting. Also it would be more straightforward to integrate with CI/CD services (it's a pity chessx does not have any automated tests yet) To be clear this does not need to be an immediate and total migration, you can just host repository on multiple sites and say use the one on sourceforge as a mirror. |

Dear chessx Developers, I've got a CERTABO physical board recently, and wanted add support for that to chessx. I've already written an UCI interface for the board which allows to play in any chess gui supporting engine vs engine games. But htat way online games are not possible. So my next idea was to add support for the board (and eventually other physical boards like DGT, Millennium) directly into chessx. The protocol from the board is very simple, it has RFID readers on every field, and sends the ID for the 40bit chip via ascii. An 8-byte bitmap sent to the board will light the respective LEDs for the fields. So it requires some software to map the chip IDs to pieces and finally produce a FEN resp. SAN, check validity of user move, resp. light the LEDs when the user is assumed to do the move for the opponent on the board. That's all done in python, as the board vendor provides open source code for that. So my current approach looks like this: I'm using a QLocalSocket to connect to the python based socket server and added two slots to hook into a) boarodChange and b) readyRead from the QLocalSocket: + connect(this, SIGNAL(boardChange(const Board&, const QString&)), this, SLOT(updatePhysicalBoard(const Board&,QString))); + connect(physicalBoardClient, SIGNAL(readyRead()), this, SLOT(moveFromPhysicalBoard())); The physical board python code sends the user move as SAN, which is fed into addVariationFromSan(). That works fine so far. For sending the current board on boardChange() to the physical board, I fetch the FEN from game().toFen(). That's fine so far. My issue is now that I need to know if the user shall make a turn or not. My first try was to get the value from UserColor(), but that apparently toggles on each boardChange() signal.. My approaches with evaluating m_machineHasToMove, m_ficsConsole- >playerColor() and game().board().toMove() were not successful yet either. So I'd kindly ask for some hint how to determine if it is the user's turn or not in a slot triggered by the boardChange() signal. Furthermore I'd ask if the approach I'm taking is reasonable at all, and would have chance to eventually get included in the mainline. Thanks a lot, Hari |

Hi, I see in your "feature fantasy list" that "store games in native binary format" is something you are considering. I think this is a great idea as long as the database format will support really huge number of games, because other chess database desktop programs available all suffer when number of games exceed some millions. Most programs simply crash or hang (for example Scid, Hiarcs and Shredder) if you try to import from a pgn-file with too many games. Others just silently stop reading after the first 2GB (for example Chess King) of the stream whilst for example ChessBase starts to be very sluggish when working on games database with more than, say, 20 million games. Now that lichess.org and others let us download pgn-files with tens of millions games each month I think many people, including myself, are looking for better chess database software for their desktop needs. I am curious about your thoughts on this. Is the native binary database format support something you are actually working on? Any chance that this will be implemented soon? Kind regards Leif Erik Larsen |

Friends of ChessX, thanks to Hannes' and James' input I have put some more love and effort into ChessX. I have compiled two installers: setup-chessx7-64.exe <https://sourceforge.net/projects/chessx/files/chessx/1.4.11/setup-chessx7-64.exe/download> chessx-1.4.11.dmg <https://sourceforge.net/projects/chessx/files/chessx/1.4.11/chessx-1.4.11.dmg/download> for Windows and Mac OS resp. Again I would like to ask for volunteers! I refactored the internal Indexing of 1.4.11, so testers should look for mismatches of shown tags like names, results, events, places, dates and so on. Filtering and sorting might also be worth a close look. If you are using TWIC as a source, you might want to take a look at games with ECO B67 (hash colision with an Event called „ATV") or a name „Becker,T1“ which collides with „Becker,Ro“. A note for Windows Users: ChessX will install inside the 64bit program parts, so you can keep both ChessX 1.4.6 and 1.4.11 parallel on your computer. A note for Mac Users: If you have indexed large databases with 1.4.9 you might need to delete the index files for large databases manually. Note: Index files from 1.4.6. will be replaced by 1.4.11 and vice versa. Make sure you backup your databases before testing! Kind regards Jens |

Hello Hannes, the change with the index was not intended as a full remedy. The Indexing takes about 30% of the parsing time and the change reduces this to roughly over 20%. The remainder is in parsing and I think, I know the lines (it’s just 6 lines) which cause the problems. But I haven't found a good workaround for these few lines yet. BTW: I fixed an off-by-one issue tonight which might have caused trouble especially with larger input. This might explain the stalling at a given value. I’d recommend updating to latest svn (>=2492). Friends of ChessX, I could need some beta-testers for ChessX. I have uploaded a version 1.4.9 for Mac OS as a preview to the upcoming 1.5.0, you can find it at the Sourceforge: chessx-1.4.9.dmg <https://sourceforge.net/projects/chessx/files/chessx/1.4.9/chessx-1.4.9.dmg/download>. If you want to help testing ChessX please make sure you have a backup of all your PGN before starting! Where you should look intensively: - I have implemented a lot of changes where filtering and listing databases and games takes place. You can do multiple selections now in the database list and the game list. Thus: Try to copy games or databases into each other and inspect results if they are as expected. - As I have a very powerful Mac I might miss things that are very slow for whatever reason. Try to open large databases if you have a not so powerful computer and evaluate, if performance is acceptable. - After testing: Compare your complete backup PGNs and your current files for destroyed content or unexepected changes. - Watch for widgets which do not properly update. Example: After drawing an arrow and pressing undo: does the arrow disappear? There has been a complaint, that the FICS-clock does not update properly (I do not know which version of ChessX), something I could not reproduce in 1.4.9. And finally - please send me some feeedback what went right and what went wrong! Kind regards Jens |
