I don't have an ICC account, but do have one on FICS, and would be happy to test and possibly help with the development (although that is probably more a case of the spirit is willing, but... :-/) Cheers, Jeremy |

In fact, it may be possible for me to modfy the installation program so you can put the location elsewhere. I don't know if you have an ICC account, but I am particulary keen to have some feedback on that. I played someone yesterfay who played 1.b4 (the Polish Opening, also called the Sokolsky or Orangutan Opening) against me with good success (for him). I then downloaded his history and will try to find out how best to tackle him. I've put a lot of effort into changing items that are in English only to a format that can be translated. For example, the whole of the startup window can be translated now - in Scid, that was all in English and there was no mechanism to translate it. So if you, or anyone else tran translate any secions missing, please let me know. |

I've just put up 3.6.15 - it fixes the bug which caused a crash when German was selected. I have also uploaded a .zip file, containing the Windows binaries, which should allow someone without admin access to install it. I hope that helps Joeri and anyone else without admin rights. I'm not sure if its correct, but according to the Sourceforge stats there were 54 downloads in under 12 hours!! Is so, there are a lot of quite people. Let's hope not too many wanted German. BTW, if anyone can update the German file (or any others), please let me know. 1) Full Windows Installation (36 MB) http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/ChessDB-with-4pieceEGTB-3.6.15.exe 2) Source code for UNIX/Linux people (8,3 MB) http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/ChessDB-3.6.15.tar.gz 3) Zipped binaries for Windows, with 4-piece endgame tablebase. This should install without requiring admin rights. (39 MB) http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/ChessDB-3.6.15-no-admin.zip |

I have put a new release of ChessDB on Sourceforge. Major changes are: * Connects to ICC to download games !! I believe this is a feature that not even ChessBase has. Some information about this is at: http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/tutorial/icc-fics-retriveal.php I think this can be a very useful way of getting played by people of your own ability, or those of people you teach. Whilst studying the games of GMs is useful, there is a lot to be gained by studying games played by people of your own level too. (As a matter of interest, is anyone reading these lists a GM??) * Larger pieces, upto 90 pixels, supplied to me by Stuart Owen. * You can import multiple PGN files contained in the one directory, without importing the files individually, or using 'cat' (UNIX) or 'copy' (Windows) to make a large PGN first. * Increased the size of the clipbase (in memory database) from 50,000 games to 2 million games. There is a choice of 4 files. 1) Full Windows Installation (36 MB) http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/ChessDB-with-4pieceEGTB-3.6.14.exe 2) Minimal Windows Installation (6.5 MB) http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/ChessDB-3.6.14.exe 3) Source code for UNIX/Linux people (8,3 MB) http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/ChessDB-3.6.14.tar.gz The full Windows install includes the 3 AND the 4-piece endgame tablebases. The UNIX tarball and minimal Windows installation both include the 3-piece tablebases but do NOT include in the 4-piece ones. The 4-piece tablebases are available separately at http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/4-piece-tablebases.zip Let me knnow if you have any problems. |

Is there anyone willing to translate parts of ChessDB? Ideally I'd like to get at least the front page of the web site http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/ translated into all languages supported, as well as the menus and text in the program. Other bits, like the tutorial http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/tutorial/ other parts of the web site, the built in help pages and tips would be nice, but are not quite so important. In particular, help from anyone able to translate some text into Czech Hungarian Dutch Norweigen Polish Portuguese Serbian would be helpful, as all the translations for those languages are very old, and none of the web site is available in those languages. Of course, if you are able to do a new language, then that would be nice too. If you are willing to do some translating, could you drop me an email. Links to the langage files can be found at: http://chessdb.cvs.sourceforge.net/chessdb/chessdb/tcl/lang/ The most important files that need translating at $lang-basic.tcl, where $lang is czech, finnish, etc. The front page of the web site is this page: http://chessdb.cvs.sourceforge.net/chessdb/website2/index.php.en?view=log Let's hope my inbox becomes full of offers of translation. IMPORTANT If you wish to translate part of the web site, please do not simply save the page and trasnate it. The website is written in PHP, so you will need to edit the php file, not the html one. |

There might be a way of coding it into html so that you can display a board position thereby using a browser to print instead of natively. Hi, printing is something that is not currently supported. I'm pretty new to the Tcl language used in ChessDB (I only started to learn it when I decided to try to improve upon Scid). But a quick Google on "Tcl printing" revealed there is nothing in Tcl to make this very easy. http://wiki.tcl.tk/2496 Does anyone else know of a decent way of printing? It will try asking on the comp.lang.tcl newsgroup, as that might reveal something, but my initial thoughts are that it is not trivial to add. Would anyone else who is a programmer like to try to add a printing facility? Dr. David Kirkby |

So if you have a problem, it is always worth trying a later one. Dave |

What is the latest version you have? I reported this to Robert Hyatt and at the time the latest was 20.14. It still is, so there is no new release on the crafty ftp server ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/source/ since then. But I am aware of another 'crafty' web site: http://www.craftychess.com/ and I have no idea of the relationship between that and Robert Hyatt's one. That talks of a version 21.5, but the sources are not available!! That is rather irritating, as I don't have a Linux box here - only Solaris. Looking at the license for crafty, it contains this line: "Any changes made to this software must also be made public to comply with the original intent of this software distribution project." So it seems someone else should not be distributing modified versions without source code. |

I see in your other email that 18.9 is OK. I just checked what I sent to Robert and it is 19.8 and lower that works. 19.9 and later will not work. It would be nice to find the problem and see which one (Scid or Crafty) is not adhering to the correct protocol. Either ChessDB needs changing or Crafty, but I'm not sure where the fault lies. |

I have a situation where I setup positions but crafty won't return anything in analysis window in chessdb and it won't play in training mode either. However, when I issue a : setboard 8/4k3/8/4K3/4P3/8/8/8 b - - 0 1 In a terminal, I get: 1. ... Kd7! 2. Kf6! Kd8! 3. Kf7! Kc7 4. e5! Kb6 5. e6! Kb5 6. e7! Kc4 7. e8=Q Kd3 8. Qd8+ Kc2 9. Qd4 Kb1 10. Qf2 Ka1 11. Kf6 Kb1 12. Ke5! Ka1 13. Kd4! Kb1 14. Kc3! Ka1 15. Qb2# I also tried something else. I played a game from the beginning and reached the previous position. The analysis stops when I reach a position in the EGTB. I try to play it in training mode but without success. Any Idea? Thanks in advance! -Eric |

However, when I issue a : setboard 8/4k3/8/4K3/4P3/8/8/8 b - - 0 1 In a terminal, I get: 1. ... Kd7! 2. Kf6! Kd8! 3. Kf7! Kc7 4. e5! Kb6 5. e6! Kb5 6. e7! Kc4 7. e8=Q Kd3 8. Qd8+ Kc2 9. Qd4 Kb1 10. Qf2 Ka1 11. Kf6 Kb1 12. Ke5! Ka1 13. Kd4! Kb1 14. Kc3! Ka1 15. Qb2# Any Idea? Thanks in advance! -Eric |

If you get something that works well in ChessDB, I will of course add it to the distribution if you wish. I've a couple of chess programs on Pocket PC and the pieces in Pocket Grandmaster are much better than any of the others. I know they have permission to use the pieces from somewhere else, but I get the feeling that was for no cost. It might be worth investigating similar possibilities. |

You can have a look at Jose chess database, which seem to generating pieces from TTF fonts on the fly. -- Michal Rudolf |
