Hi, It is rather cumbersome to download the large database from sourceforge. And the sites connected to the beta program download seems to be slow or down. Isn't there a tarball around? I would be willing to provide such a tarball via a fast website. (btw: is there a stable/new chessdb version planned sometime?) Regards, Henk. |

I have sucessfully compiled ChessDB 3.6.19 beta 1 on Mac OS X 10.5.1. No need to install Tcl/Tk, it is included in the X Code Package on the Mac OS DVD. Make install created the necessary binaries. Launching ChessDB by entering ./chessdb in a Terminal window starts up ChessDB. The startup info screen shows no issues. However, the menu bar for the program is missing. In Mac OS, the menu bar for all programs sits on the top edge of the screen. But there is no such menu bar (with items File, Edit, Tools etc. for ChessDB. Only the menu bar for "Terminal" shows up. I also tried to use the X11 environment, but to no avail. My screen looks exactly as on the screenshots on the ChessDB website. There also, no menu bar is visible: http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/tutorial/img/Mac-OS-X-ChessDBStarting.png http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/tutorial/img/Mac-OS-X-ChessDBMainWindow1.png The same problem with Scid, by the way. Is anyone else running ChessDB on a Mac. How did you handle this issue? |

The engine needed 5.53 seconds to come up with that line.

Is it possible to make the game displayed at database startup random (a la Chessbase Light)? This would be useful for databases of puzzles and endgame studies. I know I can use Ctrl+Shift+? after the database is loaded, but I'd like it to start up random. Thanks! |

I am using chessdb on linux debian. ChessDB version 3.6.19 b1 When I annotate a game using non-USacsii characters (i.e. accents), the=20 comment editor window shows a 2-byte code instead of my accented character.= =20 My system encoding is UTF-8. However, I can enter the characters in another editor using latin-1 encodin= g=20 and paste them into the comment editor window. Characters coming from .pgn= =20 files with latin-1 encoding are also displayed correctly. It seems that chessdb uses latin-1 instead of the utf-8 system encoding. How could I modify the main chessdb script to make chessdb use the system=20 encoding? By default, my tcl-tk instalation uses the system encoding, but= =20 chessdb does not. Thank you, Juan M. Hi
I'm not on the internet at home, but I use the internet at my local Library. How can I download the 3.5 million database in the Library, and take it home, on a flash drive? Also could I keep the database on a cd or flash drive not to use up too much memory on my computer?
With thanks for any replies.

Hi, I use chessdb in lunx/debian and love it. Maybe there is a bug in chessdb 2.6.19 beta-1. When I try to annotate a gam= e=20 using a chess engine and select "only obviously poor moves", it annotates a= ll=20 moves instead of only blunders. This used to work in version 2.6.18. Is it a bug in the new version? I set = a=20 proper value of "score for blunders" (1.5 or 2.0 points). Also, in the beta version ctrl-D does not open the database switcher window= ,=20 as it used to do before. Regards, Juan =2D-=20 _______________________________________________________=20 Juan M. I want to save a filtered subset of the full database. E.g., I want to save all the positions that start 1. e4 e4 2. d4 into its own separate database. I filtered my games, and hit 'save' but it says I can't save things manually. What should I do?

Yes, the 'huge' database had been built and is usable, and I did have to manually delete the zips and individual download chunks. Thanks as usual for your prompt and accurate assistance. Hi - in using Chessdb's built-in downloading facility, I ran across the
following error. This popped up after all 57 pieces of the "huge"
database had been downloaded into /bin/databases. WinXP Pro SP2. Not
sure now what to do. Oh, and I had received a previous error message
saying that Chessdb couldn't locate an md5 executable, but that one was
included with the binary Windows distribution - which is odd,
considering I thought I was using the binary Windows distribution...
couldn't execute "": no such file or directory
couldn't execute "": no such file or directory

If you want to merge them, I would split the databases a bit by date first, as a temporary measure, since 1) The 3.5 million game database has games much older than on TWIC 2) The latest TWIC issues will have games more recent than the 3.5 million game database. Hence you can create an even bigger database by using the early games from the 3.5 million game database, and the recent ones from TWIC. For the period where they overlap in time, then you will need to find the duplicates. But by not looking for duplicates over dates when they can't be any, you will make finding the duplicates a lot easier. |

If I download the 3.5 million game database on top of that, should it be possible to use ChessDB's duplicate-removal tools to unify the two databases into one large whole? Or is that unnecessarily complicated? Thanks. |

It should have been done from the Tools menu - i.e. "Tools" menu, select
"Download Games from" then select "3.5 million site #1"
ChessDB tip 1 popped up this morning, confirming this. Thanks for your help!

It should have been done from the Tools menu - i.e. "Tools" menu, select "Download Games from" then select "3.5 million site #1" > All the .si, .sg, and other files from this page are > now extracted into a single file. They should *not* be one file. There should be 3 files, one with the extension .si3, another with the extension .sn3 and another .sg3. The files do need to all be extracted, but then contatonated, such as the first part of the huge.sg3 file is made up from huge.sg3aa, the second part is huge.sg3ab, the third is huge.sg3ac and so on. You could probably do it like this on on a command tool c:\> copy /b huge.sg3aa+huge.sg3ab+huge.sg3ac huge.sg3 (but dont stop at the 'ac', but continue to the last one. ) Do likewise for the huge.si3 and huge.sn3 BUT, that would be very error prone, so I think there is a better way. What I suggest you do now it so select the Tools menu, the select "Download games from", then select "3.5 million, site #1". But when you select a directory choose *exactly* the directory to where you have put the files before. ChessDB would normally download, extract and contatonate these automatically for you, but since you have done it, it should not need to download much again - it will download 3 small zip files, but that is all. Hopefully, you should see some messages about it finding the files on your disk and so it not downloading them. Let me know if you manage that ok. |

Hi, you don't say what type of databases you want to concatenate. If they are pgn's is probably best to concatenate them using the command prompt (like the old dos screen) this is available in XP. Run the command prompt program (from memory I think it is under the accessories option). Change to drive and directory containing your pgn,s; then run "type *.pgn > anyuniquename, pgn". This should give you a concatenated pgn then you can either use it as it is in chessdb (read only) or import it into a new chessdb (scid) database (recommended) . Not knowing how much you know about programming I hope this isn't too brief. Others may know a simpler method but that's how I would do it. Hope this helped, John. |

I just installed ChessDB, and all of the files in the 3.5 million-game database. Now what do I do? I couldn't find instructions on how to create a single unified database from these 50+ files. Any help would be appreciated, or a link to instructions.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. Downloaded all the database files and unzipped them into one folder.
When I choose 'open' in ChessDB and go to that folder nothing appears. It says in the documentation that these need to be 'concatenated' into one database. How do I do this? How do I get this database to a usable form?
I am using Windows XP, ChessDB ver 3.6.19 beta-1.
Best,
BDK

I intend making a new release of ChessDB soon, but just need to sort out a few things, including some documentation, as one new feature is far from obvious and so needs a lot of explanation. However, many of the language files have not been updated recently (with the exception of Swedish, which Hans Eriksson has done a great job on). If anyone can update one, could they download the relevant file from: http://chessdb.cvs.sourceforge.net/chessdb/chessdb/tcl/lang/ The main file that needs changing is the xxxx-basic.tcl. Click on that, then download it, by selecting 'download' on the line which starts: Links to HEAD: (view) (download) (as text) (annotate) There are loads of different download links once you click a language file, but clicking it on that line will download the latest version of the file.
