on the development started by scid. The additions done by the new team to
the software are great. Keep up the good work. Now to business...
I'm having a problem with the pgn import utility. System is
FreeBSD-6.2-RELEASE. Please bear with me as I explain when I first saw this
behavior. This report is about ChessDB, not scid.
I first saw this problem in scid in FreeBSD 5.5. I though that it was due to
a defective PGN and dismissed it. The problem continued in FreeBSD 6.1. A
couple of days ago I installed FreeBSD 6.2 and the scid port; the problem
continued. I thus proceeded to investigate more deeply.
I tested with a pgn generated by xboard and got the same errors from
pgnscid. I thus went into the source code and added a couple of debugging
printf statements in pgnparse.cpp. Now I got errors for only half the moves.
I added a couple more printf statements and got errors in a 3rd. of the
moves. I continued my investigations until I got to the GetRestOfWord_NoDots
function (line 476) and added a LogError() call at the end of it to see
what was coming out of the function. Tested again and got errors for half
the moves. In the log I could see that the function was not doing it's job,
trimming trailing dots. I replaced my LogError call with a couple of
fflush(errorFile) calls, one at the start and one at the end of the
function. To my surprise, the test worked perfectly this time. I then tested
by converting an enormous PGN file, produced by concatenating the 5 ICOfy
PGN files. The test was succesful.
This misbehavior is only seen in FreeBSD. I tested pgnscid in NetBSD SPARC,
OpenBSD 3.9 i386 and latest cygwin on WinXP pro and had no problems in
converting PGN files.
Today I learned about the ChessDB project and immediately proceeded to
download and test. Problem remains exactly the same. Tested both release
(3.6.9) and latest beta (3.6.12-beta) on FreeBSD 6.2 RELEASE, FreeBSD 6.1
RELEASE and OpenBSD 3.9. Behavior in OpenBSD 3.9 is normal. Architecture is
i386.
This is what I did to get ChessDB up and running in these systems. Procedure
is exactly the same for both ChessDB versions on the three platforms tested.
1.- ran ./configure - sample output

configure: Makefile configuration program for ChessDB
Tcl/Tk version: 8.4

Location of Tcl 8.4 library: /usr/local/lib
Location of Tk 8.4 library: /usr/local/lib
Location of X11 library: /usr/X11R6/lib
Checking if your system already has zlib installed: yes.
The Makefile configured for your system was written.
Now just type "make" to compile ChessDB.

2.- Edit Makefile
added -I /usr/X11R6/include to TCL_INCLUDE
removed -ldl from TCL_LIBRARY
3.- build
ran 'gmake'
no warnings or errors
4.- install
ran 'gmake install' as root
no warnings or errors
5.- Tested pgnchessdb on simple pgn file - sample output

I'm sorry I could not trace the origin of the bug. From the evidence it
seems obvious it's a buffering problem, but wether the problem is in ChessDB
code or in the FreeBSD C++ libraries, I cannot say. But maybe someone else
has seen this problem or knows what's happening.

Indeed some texts aren't translated and some are slighly uncorrect but it's globally satisfying. I also could develop (that's more or less my job hehe). But I'm afraid I won't have time to do it. |

Yes, I think 34...Qe3?? will him nightmares for a long time to come.
BTW, here is the game analysed with Jeremy's addition to ChessDB. The=20
threshold for a ? was 0.4 and ?? 0.8. Engine was crafty 20.14. The move=20
34...Qe3 is correctly marked as 34...Qe3??.
The fact several are marked with '?', does make me question the logic of=20
supporting ?! too. One can assume these moves are pretty good, being=20
probably the 2nd best computer program vs the best human. Yet crafty=20
thinks several are giving changes of > 0.4. So ?! should be at least 0.4=20
to be useful. Then what does one set for ? and ??. Seems like anything=20
over 1.0 is a blunder, so there is no point really having the threshold=20
for ?? being much more than 1.0. So with a difference of only 0.6=20
between these, it is is very questionable if there is a need for 3=20
levels (?!, ? and ??). That is a point Jermeny has made and I'm tending=20
to agree with him.

Currently we have support for:
Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian,=20
Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish and Swedish.
English of course is what it is written it. Hans Eriksson has done a=20
great job on the Swedish, but that still leaves
Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish,=20
Portuguese, Russian, Serbian and Spanish, for which there is some=20
translation, but it it not 100%.
Is anyone able to assist on this?
Is there anyone able to do a *new* language? I was hoping to twist=20
someone arm to do Korean, but that is not going to happen.

I've put quite a bit of time/effort into removing sections which would=20
only display in English, with no way to add a translation. This will be=20
useful, but is simply a waste of effort unless someone will spend some=20
time translating.

Anyway, here are some suggestions of mine.
1. Instead of supplying proxy support for TWIC files, as some of su are
not
able to get to TWIC anyway from work (it's a banned site in Websense,

example), would it be possible to set up an option to make automatic
integration into a database supplying the already downloaded files in a
given directory, instead of getting them directly from the Internet?
2. I have a large SCID database (more than 3 million games), and I've
always
had problems with wrong names and twin games.
The problem with wrong names is that I have a lot of names which may
actually be the same name, but I cannot say whether they are or not.
The problem with twin games is that potential twin games are identified
on the basis of the header information, rather than on the move
sequence.
Would it be possible to try and apply some hash code to games, only
dependant on moves, and trying to identify twins looking at such hash
code? And would it be possible to retrofit the information coming from
discovered twins onto the names (or maybe this is already done)?
3. When you copy games into a database, that's a moment where you may
generate a lot of twins. Would it be possible to add an option to check
for twins at that time, and avoid importing them, rather than having to
go through maintenance afterwards? I guess that working this way would
be much less cumbersome. Or is there some option like this already and

someone you expect to play in a competition, or who you play regularly.

Doing this in an automated fashion will be no easy task. And how
practical it would be on a Windows system is another question. It would
certainly need some software installed that is not common on Windows.

OK, good idea, although in practice, there will be some delay anyway, as the files have to be unzipped, a database is created, then the database is merged to create a bigger one. I downloaded and built the 3.6.12-beta-1 on Mandriva 2007. A few comments:
1. When you hit cancel from the TWIC download page it closes the window, but, the menu still seems to think the
window is still open. Also maybe for consistency the button should be "Close" instead of "Cancel".
2. Please add proxy support to the download. Some of us unfornately are not directly connected to the
outside world and must go through a proxy. The http::config function supports setting up proxy information.
I suppose an additional options section on the options menu with the proxy information would hit
the sweet spot.
3. An option to add a delay or random delay between hits to the TWIC site might be a friendly thing to do,
especially if someone is attempting to get a large number of them. I think wget and lftp have those options.
I haven't done much else but, do some database maintenance and some tournament and player searches so
my testing was not complete...but, everything I tried work as I expect except for the things noted above. I will
do some more stuff this evening an report my findings tomorrow.

David, Thanks for your reply. The pgn file was not in P:\ which is the reason it didn't work. Thank you for pointing that out to me! I have since put the pgn file there & tried this & it works! Thanks for your advice & help to get me straight! Otherwise, more simply I have created a new ChessDB database in the GUI & then opened a pgn file & copied it across using the switcher window.That is much easier for me & allows me to save to any directory on any drive simply as I am used to in Windows. As I stated I am not good with DOS! Still this has been useful to explore the program.Now I shall explore the chess game features (I may need help later with that!...However the help files are useful). BTW I installed the beta version & it seems fine but I haven't really tried any version yet! On the beta installer it would be nice to have an option to create a new folder to save the program to. Anyway thanks for working on this chessDB- it's features look good & I hope they do prove useful to me & all users! (A while ago I did install SCID, but it didn't seem to be maintained & I never really looked at it & had problems trying to play a game in it vs an engine, so I gave up with it). Whereas if one only uses this when one wants to check, it is no worst than using going there with a browser - in fact less so, as one does not need to download any page to find a link. Once one is upto date with files from TWIC, downloading the new ones should take very little time at all. |
