Sorry, but I need more explanation here and a lot more detail. For a start, your version of Ubuntu, and the version of checkgmail you're using. I've had no other reports of this (which would certainly be a pretty big bug if it was widespread!) so I suspect it's caused by something in your configuration.

As far as your description of the bug goes,

1) Are you saying that having checkgmail running causes the x-server to crash? (you won't have been logged off, it's almost certainly causing X to crash ...) Or are you saying that typing in the checkgmail preference window results in a crash?

2) Can you try using a different GTK theme from the Ubuntu default and let me know if you still see the problem?

3) Can you run, from the terminal "checkgmail -v > ~/checkgmail_error_log.txt 2>&1" That will put all messages, including errors, into a logfile in your home directory called checkgmail_error_log.txt. Reproduce the crash, then have a look if any error messages are present at the end of the file

4) Please also have a look at the end of the Xorg logs in /var/log after a crash and see what's written there (you'll want the previous log, probably called Xorg.0.log.old)

Anyway, let me know the results of any/some of this and I can probably guess what's gone wrong. For the record, checkgmail is built and tested under Ubuntu Dapper, and I also occasionally test it under Gutsy.
