I think there are two possible paths we could take in
relation to using the notification area:
1) When there is a new message and the window isn't
focused, show an icon that raises the window when
clicked and then goes away.

2) Let the user hide in the window and then access it
again by clicking the notification icon. This would
behave similar to gossip, insofar as the icon would
blink upon a new message coming in without the window
being focused.

So you're thinking of something like gaim's guifications
plugin, then? Forgive my ignorance, but could you explain a
bit more what you mean by "using the notification area"?
What is the "notification area," and does it have an API?
Also, could you make the distinction between options one and
two a little clearer? I'm not sure I understand the
    difference. Thanks.

Just my 2 cents... is it not the fuction of a task list to
do that stuff? (minimize, flashing, etc) The notification
area is for system wide things IMHO like network/email/etc.
    monitoring.
