Greetings, My apologies if this request for assistance violates list rules. I am trying to make an accurate copy of a data CD. My solution to this error: ... Cannot read CD-TEXT data - maybe not supported by drive. was to use the --read-raw option. As expected, L-EC errors are ignored with this option, but each error seems to stall the the CD drive, causing the CD-ROM to spin down (but, not to a complete stop). As these errors are periodic and frequent, the CD-ROM never gets going, and the process of copying the original to local .bin file is very slow. I received approx. 200MB in over 30min. A "L-EC error" messages succeeds each disk slow down, about one every 2 seconds. (See below for two attempts.) I have experienced this reading from both original media and CD-R burned media. I assume L-EC errors have to do with the CD-R drive and driver, not real format or physical errors on the media. Question: should L-EC errors stall the CD-ROM drive during a read? Is this just happening to me? Since it is sometime not possible to decide between that the drive does not support CD-TEXT reading and the case that the current CD just does not contain CD-TEXT data you get this inaccurate message. Only some CDs actually have CD-TEXT data so that it is quite common to see this message. > was to use the --read-raw option. Usually they appear on heavily scratched disks or they've been intentionally formatted on the disk for copy protection purposes. > Question: should L-EC errors stall the CD-ROM drive during a read? The drive will itself retry to read sector several times and cdrdao also retires a failing read command 5 times (so far I remember right now). Of course it is useless to retry reading an intentionally broken sector but the drive cannot know why the L-EC check fails. So you probably have to accept the reduced readout time but you could reduce cdrdao's retry factor to speed it up a little bit. This should be your last resource: try plextor and plextor-scan instead. BTW raw reading and CD-TEXT do not have anything to share. > was to use the --read-raw option. It's the standard behaviour of drives. If you have a plextor drive there's an utility to make the drive not to slow down, called plextor-tool http://www.technik.sth.ac.at/plextor-tool -- Giuseppe "Cowo" Corbelli -->> Riding on Linux-2.4.3-xfs -<!
