Be careful what you read. The article at http://www.glenmccl.com/perfj_026.htm is actually advocating use of exceptions for improvement of performance. Note the following quotes from that article. "Exceptions can be used for more than error handling, however, and it's interesting to consider their use in improving performance" "Using JDK 1.1.3 without Just In Time compilation, the second method runs about 15% faster than the first."
