Before abandoning a purely relational DB (which some can not do for various reasons), what about using XML-formatted LOBs in a relational DB for those ojects that do not easily map to simple tables. One can then use XPATH expressions on the XML entities as an extension of SQL. It would also allow for a much greater degree of freedom in altering/extending the low-level "schema" (the XML shema) without affecting the DB schema. One could also use XSL stylesheets to format the XML part of the result sets. It would be really cool if one could create a ODBMS-like wrapper around this mechanism to hide it. One could then slide in a real ODBMS if they so chose. Oracle is already headed in this direction. - Jack -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jack A.
