some games require to detect JP or EU (like Metal Gear).
Also some games 'run to fast', or atleast to fast when
you are used to a European machine running on 50hz.

This might be a nice feature to add. I think a key
(combination) would be best to do that. Which key
    (combination) could be used?

I think it would be best to assing a key to bring up
a 'firmware' screen and then store te preferences in the cmos
since this is already supported by most msx emulators.

Please take care that the BIOS-ROM(!) does also contain
information about national properties, which are:
    - initial VDP-frequency (0x002B, bit 7: 0=60Hz, 1=50Hz)
    - character set (002B, bits 0-3: 0=jap.,1=intl.,...)
    - keyboard layout (002C, bits 0-3)
and much more. Also the speed of the PLAY command and
keyboard-repetition depends on the initial VDP-frequency
    value.
Anyway: I think the idea of the firmware-screen is not so bad.
Regardless some programs would rely on the settings that
are present in the ROM - which might be different from active
    settings.
