Martin, Here's a response to this same question I got a while back from Ian Berry (main author of Cacti): "The intended fix behind the changes in lib/snmp.php between 0.8.6 and 0.8.6b were intended to correct a problem similar to what you are experiencing. The problem occurred for cactid users that relied on PHP-SNMP for SNMP support from the web interface which does not support SNMP v2. When one of these users created an SNMP v2 device it would result in the same problem that you are experiencing."
