After update all ports (on FreeBSD 9.2 i386) (include clamav to clamav-0.98.4_1)
c-icap write error to server.log
main proc, Clamav DB load: cl_load failed: Can't allocate memory
main proc, Registry 'virus_scan::engines' does not exist!
main proc, Possibly a term signal received. Monitor process going to term all children
clamav-0.98.4_1 worked and updated correctly.

Looks that the problem is that there is not available enough memory.
Are you able to use clamd_mod instead?
