What does this patch actually fix? It seems like it just moves one translation to a different part of the file.

The current Portuguese translation of bzflag is broken and cannot be compiled to the binary format. Hence there is no Portuguese translation at all.

    See also http://i18n.debian.org/l10n-pkg-status/b/bzflag.html

    The patch fixes this issue.

I'm not sure this patch fixes that, though. There was already a different patch that Debian includes that removes the duplicate entry from that file. We do not compile our .po files. Is that something that gettext normally does? We do not use gettext, we just use their .po file format. We have our own code for parsing our .po files on demand during runtime.

In any case, I will be fixing the duplicated entry in our Github repository before our 2.4.4RC2 comes out in a few days.

I'm not an expert for po files either but I verified that the patch creates a valid Portuguese po file with

    msgfmt -c -o /dev/null <po file="">

The original one for bzflag 2.4.2 is invalid according to msgfmt. I suggest to contact the Portuguese translator directly. I'm quite sure he is able to tell you more about the patch.
