This patch complements patch #3513240 and allows to use UTF-8 characters in the .po files using extended but still compatible font format.

Message:
2 things,
1) we have code in the 2.99 branch that already supports unicode and uses
TTF fonts directly. We want to backport this instead of making an new
system.
2) you replaced the fonts with different ones, we can't use those fonts due
to licensing issues on debian.

It would help if in the future you came onto IRC to talk about changes
before you take the time to make them so we can direct your generous work
in the direction that best benifits the project and our long term goals.
