It is designed to work with old ones. It works for me, but it is your
responsibility to test your backups yourself.
Make sure you check the UPGRADING file in the burp2 source. In particular,
read the 2.0.6 section about hardlinked archives, as it contains a one-off
action that you should do.

No. My own burp server is burp2 and all its clients are on burp1, so it works
for me.

I have actively avoided the need to do this since the very early days of burp1,
and currently see no need to do it in the future.
