Ventura does not appear to work with the Buddi desktop version. Buddi Live (https://digitalcave.ca/buddilive/index.html) is a web based version of Buddi, and is compatible with Ventura.
Hello! I'm a MAC user... I've been using Buddi for the last 15 years but now that a switched on new Mac Os Ventura i'd like to know if is there a way to keep using it. On site there is not updated version and a disclaimer reports that from Big Sur Issues has been reported. Is there a way to keep using Buddi with lastest versions of Mac OS?
Edit: Nevermind! I figured out what I was doing wrong. Thank you :) I am not sure if I am misunderstanding but my Net Worth balance is adding my Debits and Credits (Debits + Credits = Net Worth) versus subtracting them (Debits - Credits = Net Worth). Is this how it should be or is there something fishy happening? Thank you!

Are there instructions
There are lots of factors which can affect this, and I can't really help with that, unfortunately...
Ok I down loaded it but now how do I open it
Yeah that sounds like a shady site. Download from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/buddi/files/Buddi%20%28Stable%29/3.4.1.16/
It was called driverupload so I didn't pay. I cannot figure out how to start the download from Sourceforge are there instructions. Thanks
Buddi is free + open source software, and you are welcome to use it completely without cost. If you wish, you are able to donate any amount of your choosing, but this is not required (and most people do not do it). I don't recall anywhere that it asks for $9 specifically - I think the message asks for an optional donation and suggests a small amount ($5? I can't remember). Did you download it from SourceForge directly, or from a third party site? Some unreputable third party sites will take open...
I am being asked to pay $9 is that correct I thought it was fee?
Same problem as above. Winfows 10 Java Version 8 Update 351
This is almost certainly due to Buddi lacking Full Disk Access in Monterey. I think that to get it working from the Buddi.app, I need to package it in a different way. I am not entirely sure how to do that, so will need to find some time to investigate and experiment. For running from the Terminal, the problem is the same, but is from the Terminal instead of Buddi itself. When you first ran it, you may have seen something like this (see screenshot-1.png) If you had clicked "Don't Allow" it would...
This is also what comes up when I try to open a file through the Java version.... no files show up! Also, I've updated to the lastest version of Java. Thanks for all of your help! Cheers!
Hi there! So....I'm back! I've just done an update to the new Monteray OS Operating System (12.5.1) and now my accounts have gone again. Up until now, even though the problems above were with BigSur, Buddi had been working fine with Monteray with the suggestions you had laid out above. I've retried following the steps that you laid out above to run Buddi, and it runs fine, however, my account details now don't show up again. I've tried opening them using the java version of buddi through the file...
Error in java launcher, error in locating the most appropriate jvm location. My java version : 8 update 321 Is my java version appropriate for lauching buddi ? I have setup an environnement variable for my administrator account on windows 10.

**Getting Buddi to Run in Windows 10 and Windows 11 Windows 10 Problems: I used Buddi for several years and agree with many others that it’s an excellent program. Unfortunately, I had trouble loading it into a Windows 10 desktop after my computer recently crashed. I followed the solution given by a post from Peter Thompson (2016-02-01) using the “standalone windows’ version (check out “downloads” at http://buddi.digitalcave.ca/download.jsp and it worked. I was able to associate my older files (“.buddi3)...
Hello, generally speaking, i need a plugin which is beneficial for marketing. i want to grow my Altai Balance product on different platform need good suggestion
BTW i am using Apple OS 10.14.6 Mojave
I have downloaded Buddi 3.4.1.16 to evaluate and l also downloaded the Balance sheet plugin 3.4.0.4 but it comes up with the error that there is no plugin in the JAR file. I have extracted the file and am usingbthe latest version of JAVA V8 281 (build 1.8.0_281_B09). Is this because the JAVA version is newer than the Plugin was written for?. I down loaded ver 1 of the plugin and it installs but stalls when creating.
No worries. Thank you SO MUCH for all of your help and patience with this problem! I really apprecaite it! Hopefully in the future Buddi will be compatible with Big Sur, but using the jar file to open it and do everything works for me! Thanks again for your continued persistence in helping and supporting me with this problem. It's such a relief that everything works now! :D
FYI I have updated the Buddi web site to indicate that Big Sur is not currently supported, and appears to have issues with running Buddi.
Well that's good to hear that it is working now. You are correct, when running the .jar file directly it will show up in the Dock as "Java", not "Buddi". This is expected behaviour. You can also try double clicking on the .jar file, instead of going to the Terminal; that should also launch Buddi (via Java still, but better than needing to go into the terminal). I am going to go out on a limb here and say that there is some change to how Apple launches Java applications, which makes the Buddi app...
Wait.....I just tried opening My Accounts file from going File > Open in the java version....it worked!!!!! It's there!!!! OMG HOORAY!!!!!!! So I saved My Accounts File.... But now Buddi will only open when I put in the jar file command into Terminal. When I do that, Java is the only program that opens...Buddi just sits in my dock doing nothing and is not officially open. When I try to open Buddi directly, the same problem that I posted at the beginning of this thread occurs.
ALL RIGHT!!!!!! We have movement at the station!!!!! Gah. Sorry again... in this case the name of your jar file is Buddi-3.4.1.16.jar. So the command would be java -jar ~/Downloads/Buddi-3.4.1.16.jar Again, my apologies...

It's hard to tell you what to type when I don't see your system :-( Let's try this. 1) Download the Buddi.jar version from http://sourceforge.net/projects/buddi/files/Buddi%20%28Stable%29/3.4.1.16/Buddi-3.4.1.16.jar 2) Ensure that it is in your Downloads folder 3) Run 'java -jar ~/Downloads/Buddi.jar' from the terminal (again, no quotes) 4) Copy the output here
Exactly the same thing happens!!!! username@192-168-1-100 ~ % java -jar /Applications/Buddi-3/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar Error: Unable to access jarfile /Applications/Buddi-3/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar username@192-168-1-100 ~ % java-jar/Applications/Buddi-3/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar zsh: no such file or directory: java-jar/Applications/Buddi-3/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar I really apreciate your continued support in helping me here. You must be so frustrated! I know I am!
OK, it looks like you have Buddi installed in a different location than I expected. Change step 2 above to the following: java -jar /Applications/Buddi-3/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar and copy / paste the logs here again.
I've also just tried to download Buddi and install it again, and the exact same thing happens. The program itself opens, but I can't open my Accounts file, or open up a completely new one. I've also updated my java to the newsest version. Nothing changes :(
All righty....so...this is what came up on my Terminal: Last login: Tue Nov 24 21:02:30 on ttys000 username@192-168-1-100 ~ % java -jar /Applications/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar Error: Unable to access jarfile /Applications/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar username@192-168-1-100 ~ % java-jar/Applications/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar zsh: no such file or directory: java-jar/Applications/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar I don't know why it's saying that it can't find it or there's an error,...
OK, let's try running this directly. Please do the following: Run /Applications/Utilities/Terminal Type 'java -jar /Applications/Buddi.app/Contents/app/Buddi.jar' (without the quotes) and hit enter You should see some text scroll by, and then the Buddi application should open. Try to open your data file from File -> Open. Once you are all done, copy and paste all the text that was printed on your console into this forum thread. It should start with something like the following: Nov 23, 2020 7:12:52...
Hi there, I just deleted the log file in my Finder and then tried to run Buddi. The log file that was created after I opened Buddi was an empty log file, similar to the one above. Not sure what's going on! Cheers.
This file is empty... can you please try deleting it and re-running Buddi again. If it is re-created, please send the new version. Thanks
Oh I see!!!! Sorry about that. This should be what you're looking for. Although, just having a look at it now it's completely blank! Where as all of the other log files that are in that folder are not. That's obviously a problem..... Thanks again so much for helping me with this! I really appreciate it!

That screenshot is from the system logs. Look in your home directory. 1) Open Finder 2) Select the menu option Go -> Go to Folder... 3) Type "~/Library/Logs" 4) You should see the Buddi log there. (OSX hides the user's Library folder by default, so you can't navigate there by clicking) Cheers
Thanks for replying! I don't seem to have a file with that name.....I'm guessing that's the problem?
Can you please send the log file (located at ~/Library/Logs/Buddi.log) Thanks

If you are comfortable doing so, you can send me your data + backup files and I can see if there is data in them. If they are encrytped I would need your password as well. Don't put them on this public forum; you can email me directly at buddi <at> digitalcave <dot> ca. </dot></at> If the problems started after upgrading, I would suggest going back to the previous version. The changes recently have been various translations (so if you are an English speaker there is no difference) and some packaging...
hi there Left Buddi open overnight and this morning it crashed. I reopened it, and decided to try and save it. It seemed to work. And then crashed again. I tried to open this morning's backup file, and none of my accounts nor categories are appearing. I've apparently lost hours of tax return work : (. Can you think of any way I can restore the backup file? Thanks for your help. I just don't know what's up. Buddi has been great up until I updated it recently.
Can you be sure that you selected the new folder in the Save As dialog?
hmmmm...... I definitely created a new folder.
If it said the file already exists, you probably had not created a new folder. If you want to use the same name, then first rename the folder. We want to use a completely new folder, so that whatever permissions are set on the old one are not used anymore.
hi Got as far as saving the new file and got the window: "You selected a file which already exists. Do you wish to overwrite this file?" I'm thinking yes.......?
It looks like there was a problem writing to the folder where your data file is located. The error message says "Operation not permitted", which normally means that OSX has locked down a folder. I would suggest doing the following: 1) In Buddi, go File -> Save As 2) In the "Save Data File..." prompt, navigate to your Documents folder. 3) Click "New Folder" button and create a new folder for your data file. Something like "Buddi Data" or similar could be a good name, but it doesn't really matter what...
hi there Here you go. Thanks for the help : )
OK, on to the next thing... can you please send me your Buddi.log file? This is located in ~/Library/Logs/Buddi.log. Library is normally hidden in OSX; if you go to Finder and hit Cmd + Shift + G it will open a "Go to Folder" prompt - enter "~/Library/Logs" and hit OK. The log file will hopefully describe what the problem is in more detail.
hi - I did check, and there is no folder specified. I guess then, that there's nothing to delete. thanks Robin
Can you check the Backup Location configuration parameter? Go to the Buddi preferences, click the Advanced tab, and look at the Backup Location value. If it is set to a folder you need to ensure that folder exists. Otherwise, you can just delete it and it will save backups to the same location as the data file.
hi Thanks for the quick reply. I did as you suggested and here is the screenshot of the error message. BTW, this was the same error message that I got the first time. I'm wondering if all of the application's files need to be in a folder together with the application…? It seems lost...
Hi Robin, I would suggest that you try saving again (possibly going Save As so you can specify the location). If you get the error message again, please take a screenshot so that we can see exactly what it is saying. Cheers
I recently installed an update and unlike other software it doesn't seem to seamlessly integrate with, and open, my data file. Tried to save a file I'd worked on and got an error message saying it couldn't find the target folder (or something like that, I didn't note it down as I was panicking). I'm afraid to quit Buddi now as I'm afraid I'll lose data. Help? thanks.
I am trying to remove a plugin on a Win10, but unable to find what you talking about: "1) Navigate to your plugins folder. This will be under c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Buddi\Plugins on Windows; please let me know if you need this for other OS as well (Windows seems to be the only one affected by this bug)." could you please direct me or any help would be greatly appreciated...
I am a new user trying to use the product but I am un-able to save any data. The error msg says to see the Buddi Log but I am unable to find it on my 2017 MBP running Catalina 1at err0.15.2. If I go to Buddi Help, that error's out with a 404
Make sure that you are running as admin. If that doesn't work, you can try the Windows Standalone version instead of the installer.
We are running Java version 8. We get a message Directory cannot be written. Please choose another directory. See the attached.
Is there an update to this issue? Namely: - could anyone solve the issue of accessing the preferences? - is there a new release planned? I have a pretty old MacBook Pro, so the newest OS I can install is El Capitan, which I did recently (was on Yosemite before). I ran into the same issues as described in this ticket. Nope, El Cap (10.11.6) - I have always been a tech laggard, feeling if things work, why break 'em!! No worries... Depending on your feelings toward 'the cloud', perhaps you can try BuddiLive... it is a web based version that I have been developing for a while. I have switched over to it myself for a number of years now, but development has been slow and it is still technically in beta. Eventually I want to bundle it as a standalone application so that you would run the server on your machine and interact with it through a web browser, but I have been lazy. Anyway, if you want to give it a shot,...

Hi Mike, Are you by change running High Sierra? I have received some reports of issues with that OSX version (although in my tests I have not been able to reproduce the problems, so something else must be a factor as well). As for the scheduled transactions, unfortunately there is no way to set them to run in the future, nor can you edit them after creation. Sorry! Buddi is very much a simple budgeting tool for personal use... even small businesses probably have more need for features than Buddi...
We have a small letting business. I say 'business': about breaks even, sometimes worse, so more charity! Anyway, after years of soldiering on with Quicken 2000 in a Win7 vm (on my Mac!), I am having a look to see if Buddi could work for us better: quite promising, I like the simple layout! However....the top main menu keeps disappearing, which is odd. Not sure what makes it reappear....time, or clicking somewhere. Very odd! First time here: not sure if this format to share will show the issue. (https://flic.kr/p/HgaZZQ)...

I don't see it? I've attached a screenshot.
Preferences are accessed using Edit -> Preferences menu option. Does that work for you?
That new version allows me to delete transactions, yay. Regarding the other issue, when I was initially using Buddi, I had found some option to display my accounts by themselves, rather than by type of account, and also to use the clear/reconciliation checkboxes; but I do not recall how I found that. I am used to applications having the Command+, shortcut for preferences–is Buddi supposed to have such a preferences menu too, even when running just the jar? Could you try a new version? http://public.digitalcave.ca/Buddi-3.4.1.16_b2.dmg If this doesn't work, could you please send me some screen shots of the issue? I am a bit unclear on exactly what is happening. (I really should upgrade to High Sierra, but I don't have any personal Macs any more, the only one I have is a work machine and we have not been given authorization to upgrade yet, due to compatibility issues just like this with other programs).
It doesn't seem to allow me to delete transactions either.
Using the jar, Buddi seems to work but have no preferences menu/options. Might a future update resolve this so that I could use the clear/reconciliation checkboxes?
