After selecting one of the initial options, the next
screen is too wide for my monitor's resolution
(1024x768) and I cannot resize it

What version are you using? The default resolutio was indeed
a bit big before 0.3.91.

A quick fix could be to remove .gnome2/bonfire.session that
will remove all the geometry settings and return to the new
defaults of 0.3.91 that are 640x480 (which hopefully will
fix your problem).

It worked!! Thanks, I'm using Bonfire 0.3.91 and I didn't
install Bonfire before.
