What about a Jabber/IRC conference? That way people can see what is 
being discussed but don't have to stop replying to email/coding/eating 
cakes. The thing I am wary of is that all the interesting discussion 
happens off the mailing list and we don't have the history for people to 
look back through.

Moving away from the mailing list means that people who aren't in the 
conference call don't feel part of the community and miss most of the 
discussion.
