Since we (well, at least Brandon and myself) prefer SuSE Linux to Red Hat, it was a shame to have so much trouble trying to get the quickcams working in SuSE. On Saturday I met the manager of IBM's Linux Technology Center and he said he'd be glad to speak with the SuSE programmers and get our video problems fixed. He also routinely speaks with the redhat folks, though he vastly prefers suse. He's interested in helping us get Linux working for a real-life use.
He'd probably be willing to talk to the programmers about other things as well, though I haven't asked him.
So, should we switch back to SuSE? Any opinions?

I'm no linux guru but I've tried Redhat 7.3 and Mandrake 8.2.  I have to say I much prefer Mandrake, which is both easier to install and use.  There seems to be a bug in the redhat boot loader, which means that if you have two hard drives and want a dual boot system (as I do) windows has to be on the primary interface and redhat on the secondary.

One bugbear with both the versions of linux I've tried is that neither work with my USB Acatel Speedtouch ADSL modem.  There are a number of folks who supposedly have developed fixes for this, but every one that I've tried (including creating a new kernel) has failed to get the modem working.  It looks like I'll have to wait for later versions of linux before I can test out what the internet access is like.

One thing which encourages me to have a go at writing some linux software is the release of Kylix 3, which is practically identical to the C++ Builder software I use under Windows.
