I made those changes and they do seem to be helping. Thanks.

I can imagine that this wouldn't be non trivial. The only other benefit I
see is not "intimidating" someone who only wanted boa as a editor. Given
that my main concern was resource consumption, I wouldn't push for this
being too high on the list.
