I was wondering if anyone has had any success porting Boa 0.0.13 to wxPython 2.3.2 in a GTK environment. I'm just beginning to look at this and there seem to be a wide range of problems to address. There are a large number of GTK errors (eg. Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 1388 (gtk_widget_destroy): assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed.) which I think are going to be difficult to rectify without a solid knowledge of wxPython internals (which I don't have). There is also the issue of generated code complying with wxPython 2.3.2. The major issue appears to be elimination of size and pos attributes for wxStatusBar. Does anyone know of other blatant non-compliant code issues? There are of course also a plethora of minor bugs. John Bell __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm wondering if anyone can enlighten me as to the status of this project. Reading through the message logs of this list it seems that Riaan is the only developer. However, there have been no posts from him since last September, and the last update to a file on CVS was in early October. At that stage it seemed that 0.1 was imminent. I'm asking because I'm new to this product and I'm finding a lot of problems (core dumps, errors from GTK etc) with the designer under Python2.2/WxPython2.3.2 (GTK environment) and would like to know if there's any chance of getting them fixed. Also there's the issue of the generated code complying only to some old version of wxPython (2.2?). Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I got this off SF in the "Site Docs" area http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=764&group_id=1 Here is the highlights: Daily tarballs of entire project CVS Repositories are now available for backup or mirroring purposes. These tarballs are generated daily, and ar available at : http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cvstarballs/projectname-cvsroot.tar.gz where projectname is the UNIX name of the project you want to download. Hi Boa-Administrator! from behind a firewall I cannot check it out via CVS... would it be possible to put it as 'beta' on the download list??? would by wonderful :-) and easy too (for an average minded pythoneer, who isn't a cvs-user!) thanks Peter (=PA=) |

Sorry about the short reply, but I'm heading out of town soon. The documentation is available as a separate download, and is not included in CVS, because it is pretty big file. You should be able to find the zip file on the Boa site somewhere, or seach the archives of this list where I've posted instructions before. If I had more time I'd tell you exactly where to find it. Hope that helps. --- Patrick K. Sorry, but this question is a little off topic as it has more to do with CVS than Boa. After downloading 0.0.13 with the standard cvs command I note that the Docs directory is essentially empty. Everything is in the Docs/Attic directory. How do you go about downloading this? For all I know other stuff is also missing. John __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, that far I've got myself too. But the designer still produces some errors. Being new to wxWindows, wxPython and Boa all together makes for a hard start :( Perhaps I'll try later to capture the errors and post them here ;) Andreas > > Steve > > -----Original Message----- > From: boa...@li... > [mailto:boa...@li...] On Behalf Of > Andreas Kostyrka > Sent: January 3, 2002 7:50 AM > To: boa...@li... > Subject: [Boa Constr] Boa & wxPython 2.3.2 > > Hi! > > Anybody trying to update Boa for 2.3.2? > > Andreas > > _______________________________________________ > Boa-constructor-users mailing list > Boa...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/boa-constructor-users > > > _______________________________________________ > Boa-constructor-users mailing list > Boa...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/boa-constructor-users |

I've recently downloaded the 0.0.13 CVS release. I understand that Boa currently works wxPython2.2.5 and produces code compliant with that version. I've looked through the mail archive and can't find any indication of plans to move to a more recent version. Is there a timeline for moving to the current wxPython? What version have you ported? I've just decided to try out Boa after getting a little tired of the amount of time it takes to discover all the "undocumented secrets" of wxPython. I downloaded 0.0.13 and started hacking it to port to wxPython2.3.2/Python2.2/Linux. Naturally, being new to the product I am a little cautious about hacking the code where I'm unsure of the author's intent. I'd be very interested in seeing what you've done. Well, I'm not an official developer (if such a thing exists for this project) but I did manage to hack Boa so it works in wxPython 2.3.2. No guarantees it works properly (I know there was a bug in 2.3.1, don't know if it's fixed now), but at least it starts up without errors. I can send you a copy if you want. Okay, I've now started to get BOA running on my Redhat 7.2 system. Right now Views/STCStyleEditor.py is dying while trying to do this: commonDefs = eval(cfg.Read(commonDefsFile)) It appears its looking for a file called common.defs.gtk. Where do I get that? Sorry if this is a FAQ. Warren |

Warren, My understanding is that it is required for parsing the methods. Some of the documentation does state that modifications to any _init_* methods are strongly discouraged. Personally I have done some changes to _init_* methods but with mixed results, (ie. I probably didn't save any time in the end). Okay, I've browsed through the source of boa-0.0.13, and I've noticed that there haven't been many changes recently. What's currently being worked on and what can I help with? I asked this same question about six months ago, but I am now working from home, and I have a little spare time to contribute to this project. Warren Postma |

I have noticed that if I delete the empty lines shown here from my Frame object, Boa's form designer stops working: class wxFrame1(wxFrame): def _init_coll_menuBar1_Menus(self, parent): parent.Append(menu = self.menu2, title = 'FileMenu') def _init_utils(self): self.menuBar1 = wxMenuBar() self.menu1 = wxMenu(title = 'Test') self.menu2 = wxMenu(title = 'Test2') self._init_coll_menuBar1_Menus(self.menuBar1) Is that by design? If so, why? Warren |

I was trying to check out from CVS, and I get the following error: $ cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/boa-co ntstructor login (Logging in to ano...@cv...) CVS password: <hit Enter> cvs login: authorization failed: server cvs.Boa-Constructor.sourceforge.net rejected access to /cvsroot/boa-contstructor for user anonymous So, that's what's supposed to happen. Could somebody please let me know what's happening? I'm using CVS 1.11 via cygwin on Windows XP. What should I be doing? Warren |

Just for the sake of completeness, I found another bug/error... When you click on Preferences > Source > HTML (or try to edit a Zope DTML Document), you get an error ..... NameError: name 'wxSTC_HPHP_STRINGEOL' is not defined Editing the file stc-styles.rc.cfg and removing that entry seems to have fixed it HTH Cheers, Jon |

Thanks for the help Patrick, The traceback was - ____________________________________________________________________________ ____ Traceback (most recent call last): File "boa.py", line 455, in ? main() File "boa.py", line 438, in main app = BoaApp() File "boa.py", line 294, in __init__ wxApp.__init__(self, false) File "c:\python21\wxPython\wx.py", line 1573, in __init__ _wxStart(self.OnInit) File "boa.py", line 313, in OnInit inspector = Inspector.InspectorFrame(self.main) File "C:\Boacvs\boa\Inspector.py", line 107, in __init__ self._init_ctrls(parent) File "C:\Boacvs\boa\Inspector.py", line 85, in _init_ctrls self.statusBar = wxStatusBar(id = wxID_INSPECTORFRAMESTATUSBAR, name = 'stat usBar', parent = self, pos = wxPoint(0, 430), size = wxSize(282, 20), style = wx ST_SIZEGRIP) File "c:\python21\wxPython\stattool.py", line 55, in __init__ self.this = apply(stattoolc.new_wxStatusBar,_args,_kwargs) TypeError: size is an invalid keyword argument for this function ____________________________________________________________________________ ________ So I removed "size = wzSize(282, 20)" from _init_ctrls in Inspector.py I then got a similar Traceback saying "pos is an invalid argument..." So I removed "pos = wxPoint(0, 430)" Then I got "No drives defined, attempt autodetect?" - when I said "Yes" it crashed with a Traceback so long, my DOS Window scrolled past it and I couldn't get it back! So I tried again and said "No". This time I got an error in ErrorStackFrm.py -line 45 - the Size and Pos arguments again. Removed them. This time it opened! :-) But there was an error "can't open file 'C:\BOACVS\BOA\Docs/tips.txt' (error 3: the system cannot find the path specified)" ...not a big deal, but it would be nice to fix it if that's possible? Note : I found out the "No drives defined" error was cos I'd accidentally downloaded everything as read-only from CVS! Oooops! Once i fixed that, it was able to auto-detect the drives Sorry for the long message, hoping it might help others in a similar situation! I now seem to have a working Boa... unless I missed something? But when I click on Zope in the Transports, nothing happens. Is there a config/preference I have to set somewhere to specify my Zope location, username, password? I posted another message about this, but you might not have seen it. In a nutshell, a status bar method signature (ie, what parameters are expected) changed in the wxPython beta. The boa code has not been updated yet. Again, it is easy to fix. There are two spots in the boa code that call this status bar method. The Python error message will give you the line number and file name. Start boa from a dos window to see the complete error message. (C:\> python boa.py) Simply remove the extra parameters from the method calls. Hope that helps. (Wish I had documented this when I did it for myself.) Feel free to write back if it didn't work or if you have further problems. --- Patrick K. Hi all, I'm new to Boa - was pointed to it by various enthusiasts on the Zope mailing lists, as a great editor for Zope, and a nice way to help me learn "proper" Python. However, I'm having troubles getting it installed! I got the latest version of Boa from CVS. Scanned the mailing-list and saw a post from Patrick K O'Brien - http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/2090/2001/11/0/7187507/ - saying that I needed wxPython-2.3.2b7-Py21-hybrid.exe, which I've installed. I then got the "You need wxPython 2.3.0" error on startup, which I got rid of by deleting the relevant "if..." statement in Boa.py. But now when I startup Boa, it seems to get as far as "Importing Inspector", then gives "Error on startup - size is an invalid keyword argument for this function" and then shuts down when I click OK ...and I'm stumped! :-) Could anyone please give some (fairly simple) instructions on how to fix this? I'm running on Win2000 pro Thanks in advance, Cheers, Jon |
