    Hi

We have a customer who is interested in using MXF files with HDR material initially using XAVC files. Do you know if there are any standards for HDR metadata in MXF files and, if so, do you have any plans to add supprt for HDR metadata to BMX? Failing that can you suggest a way to add generic metadata with BMX that could carry HDR information.

    Many Thanks in advance
    Steve

I know that the HLG and PQ HDR types are identified by a descriptor transfer characteristic label and these can be set using bmx or are extracted from the H264 bitstream for example. I don't know anything about HDR metadata but a quick search suggests this is SMPTE ST 2094, where ST 2094-2 defines the mapping into MXF. I don't have plans to implement this in MXF. You can embed static metadata as XML in MXF, but I'm not sure this is the most appropriate mechanism for low-level HDR essence metadata. (I hesitate to even suggest you could use SDI ANC)

      Thank you.

That was the answer I expected! If I was much much younger I would add a smiley face at this point.

    Hi Philip,

actually what would be easy to add is ST2086, aka static HDR metadata (mastering display + luminance min/max). Let me know if you need the info on this. ST2094 is for dynamic metadata and it's still work in progress at the moment..

Thanks for the info. The static data does indeed look a lot simpler and I see that ST 2067-21 specifies the descriptor properties. I suppose this is something I would look at adding once requirements are clearer, possibly as part of the DPP/IMF ST2084/HLG interoperability work.

Yes all this will eventually be part of the DPP/EBU IMF-TV effort. I've sent you a PM so we can discuss this.
