I have installed MediaWiki 1.24.1. I am following instructions found at http://help.blue-spice.org/index.php/BlueSpice_2.22.0/Installation_Manual but when I try to execute the step under "Configuration of BlueSpice" and run 'php maintenance/update.php' I am getting php parse errors on the LocalSettings.php like the following:
"PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '$wgEnableUploads' (T_VARIABLE) in /var/www/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php on line 76".
I initially tried commenting out the offending variable (all default values from the install) and I am now up to 10 of them so I thought I'd see if this was a common problem.
Maybe I missed something somewhere.

have you tried running the "installcheck.php"?
There is a little diagnostics screen.
When you have missed something this will tell you.

I have removed and reinstalled everything and now have it working.
