I like the idea of the vertical menuing in BlueERP as opposed to the horizontal style of CK-ERP. But I also like having the full screen width available like CK-ERP. So what do you think about the idea of changing the vertical menus to a javascript 'windowshade' style with a
heading of 'Click for Menu' at the top? The menu would only drop down when clicked or moused over and would otherwise be out of the way. Look at this page for an example: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/dropmenuindex.htm
Look at the Demo: samples. These stay out of the way until you want them. So that way we could have the best of both approaches.

Please look at this options in the Preferences -> Common Preferences -> Autohide Sidebox menu's. Is this what you want?
Alternatively, I am thinking of having horizontal menus intead of the vertical ones, I as acknowledge the issue of small screens.

There is already a feature similar to what you describe.
Go to preferences->Click or Mouse Over to show menus (towards the bottom). I think this would achieve something similar to what you are trying to describe.
