Category: None Group: None Status: Open Priority: 5 Submitted By: Richard Rauch (rkrolib) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Clarify ibot's "addressCharacter in /msg" complaint. Initial Comment: I'm a newbie to blootbot. I wanted to send some commands to it, and people object of course if I spam a public channel. So I use /msg. I had no idea that the ~ was not a part of the command. So I would say something like: /msg ibot ~ibot ...and would get this as the first part of the response: *ibot* please don't use the the addressCharacter when private messaging Now, recall that I don't know much of anything about blootbot/ibot. While it's not hard to figure out what "the addressCharacter" is, it is less than clear how to send the "~ibot" command to ibot in a /msg without using the ~. I.e., to me as a newbie, it seemed that ~ was part of the command, so ibot was whining about something that seemed inherently required in what I was trying to do. Probably anyone sending the ~ in a /msg to ibot does not know, any more than I did, what ibot really wants. I would suggest clarifying the ibot response in some way. Perhaps: *ibot* The addressCharacter is used in public channel messages to get ibot's attention. Please do not use it in in sending a private message to ibot. It is not strictly a part of the command you are trying to use. (Yeah, that's a little verbose, but most users would only need to see it once to figure out what ibot was complaiing about. Myself, I mostly ignored the current complaint from ibot because it wasn't clear what to do about it and ibot seemed to work well enough if the ~ was included anyway.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=358794&aid=1226031&group_id=8794 |
