Interesting green roof technology. Kirk, you might find the consideration of a sustainable, portable means of "reducing target signature" (natural camouflage) of value. http://www.greengridroofs.com/default.htm -Van -----Original Message----- From: Schneider, Richard L. These are excellent sources. Eric, I've archived all the old newsletters since I subscribed. If you are interested, I could 'archive' my folder and forward them. When I presented the green roof concept in our greening charette at the Naval Support Activity Mid-South (Millington TN, July 2000), I was given some very dubious looks, until I pointed out that three such magazines were already on their base! The program driver was not, however, green building. It was an integrated design solution. The Earth Conservation Corps in Washigton, D.C. received a pump station building from Potomac Gas & Electric to be renovated for a sturgeon hatchery, raptor recovery, and environmental education facility. It was dedicated November 28, 2000 as the Matthew Henson Earth Conservation Center ( http://www.counterpart.org/news/20001211/a0006.asp <http://www.counterpart.org/news/20001211/a0006.asp> ). This renovation project was executed by a reserve unit of the U.S. Navy's Construction Battalion (Sea Bees). It was constructed with a vegetated (green) roof to reduce heat transmisson and minimize stormwater runoff into the Anacostia River. It is a tool in our toolbox, but not used very often...yet. I like the idea of reducing target signature as a driver for its environmental benefits, too. V/R Michael G. I have been talking about it for the last 6 months. But I don't know any DoD agency that has tried to incorporate it yet in a project. (I always thought it might have additional benefit, especially for AF OCONUS bases, in reducing building target signature [natural camouflage]). I am eager to hear about in experience with this technology.
