I haven't tried it myself - someone just told me they work.

I do know there are multiple formats.  Animated gifs are just full frames
with a time delay.  MNG supports both PNG and JPG as the underlying
frames.  It also supports the idea of "sprites" where you have objects
moving around the underlying key frame.

My guess is that JPG isn't supported since it isn't supported for
wallpapers, and that only animated sprites are supported since they
require less drawing effort, are more compact, and is what the
existing balloons wallpaper seems to be.

Have you had any success after uploading MNG or BCI animations? I've
had no luck, I either get a white screen (MNG) or only the first frame
(BCI) of my animation when I select it as wallpaper on the 4400. The
actual uploading process works fine, it's just that the 4400 is
choking on my animations.

Ok I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of, but I cannot figure out how to 
save or write to the VX4400 filesystem with Bitpim. The readme says 
that "Reading/writing the brew filesystem and contents" works.

Well I CAN read the filesystem, but I cannot figure out how to modify 
it, save brew apps to disk, or copy from disk to phone. Drag and drop 
doesn't work.

How do I save a brew app or folder to disk? Can someone shed some light 
on this for me?

Thanks for the info.  I will put something together this week and get back
to you.  When I was looking at the existing data in my phonebook, I noticed
that for some records, '?offset111' was set to 23 and '?offset20c' was set
to 255 and I didn't have enough data to see a pattern as to why.

When I write my output, will I just be setting the three offset fields to 0
and that will suffice?  I enjoy being adverturous, but my phone is vital to
my day to day work, so I don't want to kill it.  Besides that, the format
looks quite simple.

What offsets?

The index.idx file that bitpim uses is just a dump of a Python dict

It looks like there is code at http://www.libmng.com/ that could
be used (I spent a few hours a week ago looking into it in more
detail.  Unfortunately the documentation is poor).

I will do something about it at some point, but there are higher
priority items first (finish calendar, generic CSV import/export).
Of course other people are welcome to contribute code :-)

could I get these files onto the phone?  I understand your reasoning for =
converting everything to BMP, and I like the fact that I can =
automatically drag and drop files of any size/type and it just works, =
but would it be possible to override this?  I would love to get the =
famous "Dancing Chicken" on my phone ASAP  :P

Weird...  I tried several times before I sent the email.  I eventually
copied the file over with GAGIN.  I just tried again with BitPim and it
worked like a charm.  I have no clue.  If I come across the error again, I
will besure to pass on the data you requested.

The order I am doing things in is:

  - Get all basic functionality working (calendar is pretty much
    last piece of this)
  - Work on generic import/export (ie comma seperated files)
  - Work on specific import/export (palm, outlook, mozilla etc)

If nobody helps, it will be several months, and probably longer.

filesystem full?  Can you repeat this?

If it is repeatable, can you turn on protocol logging
at the last possible moment before you repeat the
problem and then email me the results (ro...@ro...)

That usually means some other program is using com3.

Are you running a Palm or PocketPC sync program that is grabbing
