Thank you for your response. I switched my machine to Ubuntu 20.04 and it is slow going, as I am a linux beginner. Do you have the package in a .deb file. If you could send it to me I think I could use gDebi to unpack and install. Then we could at least go from there. * Mark ________________________________ From: Daniel Perelman <da...@co...> Sent: Monday, September 6, 2021 6:46 PM To: bit...@li... <bit...@li...> Subject: Re: [BitPim-devel] Is there anyone still interested? bitpim's latest and greatest rpm appears to be for CentOS 4.5, which is EOL. I'm running CentOS 6, so it appears I'm stuck with using the source. There seems to be some roadblocks along the way. First checkout seem to be incorrect: [hennebry@localhost bitpim]$ svn checkout https://svn.code.sf.net/p/bitpim/code/trunk/bitpim # one line ... A bitpim/examples/sanyo4900read_public.txt U bitpim svn: warning: Error handling externals definition for 'bitpim/buildrelease': svn: warning: Repository moved permanently to 'https://svn.code.sf.net/p/bitpim/code/subprojects/buildrelease/trunk'; please relocate Checked out revision 4835. I do not unerstand this. Also, bitpim claims to require rather old versions of its dependencies. My CentOS has old versions of what it has, but bitpim claims to require older. Are those really the requirements? Can I use more current versions? It might be tricky getting CentOS and bitpim versions of things to coexist. Where are the build instructions. Are there any other developers? Has bitpim been abandoned? |

Hi, I have tried to use BitPim with a Samsung Galaxy S II, model code GT-I9100, but it cannot be detected because it's not in the Phone Wizard. Could you please update BitPim so that it recognizes the smartphone *Samsung Galaxy S II *with model code *GT-I9100 *so that it can be detected? Thanks! |

Timothy, I'm not sure why I am still subscribed to this list, but I imagine sentimental reasons probably have something to do with it. I used to be in charge of the Mac builds for the bitpim project, so I suppose I am qualified to answer your question. I joined the project some time in 2005 for the exclusive (and self-serving) reason to get my crappy LG phone supported by bitpim. It was a derivative of a supported phone, so after a Saturday's worth of reading posts on Howard's forums (which will lower your IQ significantly) I mashed together an ugly patch and fired it off to Joe Pham - the main developer. After their Mac builder dropped out I offered my services and just like that, we were up and running. There was a time when our project was hot - really hot. We would routinely get posts from forensics experts inside and outside government. There were also paid offers to develop the package for certain phone models and even "rush orders." (We need it for a warrant, etc.). These, as Kurt Vonnegut might have said, were the salad days. Eventually three things happened that brought development to a screeching halt. First, there was a major version change of python (the underlying platform in which bitpim is written). This doesn't seem like it should have been a major problem, but the project had been designed so long ago that some of the tools we relied upon to build the executable were getting abandoned. Every time python jumped up a version, found ourselves having to patch and rebuild another python module. It was worse on the Mac side since our python build is, ahem, "centrally planned." Do you remember the scene in the Simpsons where they travel to the future and Smithers is talking to the frozen head of Montgomery Burns? Smithers says to the head, "Don't worry sir, we'll have you up and running just as soon as our scientists find a cure for....37 stab wounds in the back." In the background, a researcher shouts "We just got 24!" and everyone rejoices. Bitpim development sometimes felt a lot like that. The second reason was that there was a sea change from the traditional clam-shell phone to the smartphone. I don't want to say that the iPhone or Blackberry killed our project, but it made it less and less relevant. I can't prove it, but I would hazard the guess that the number one reason we lost developers (and users!) was that they would switch to a smartphone. Speaking from personal experience, it was a lot harder for me to do the work on bitpim when my shiny new iPhone was already syncing my music, calendar, and contacts. In at least one sense, bitpim has gone the way of the horse and buggy for most users, save luddites like my brother - a 29 year old nuclear physicist with a Jitterbug. The third reason is more common to a lot of open source projects; we all grew up and got jobs. In 2008 I started law school full time, in addition to work, and that left little time for bitpim. Alan Cox, one of the original Linux developers, said it best when he said something to the effect of "I'm now less concerned about race conditions and more concerned about repotting the plants in my apartment." Open source development is fun, but it's a young man's game - filled with Mountain Dew, artificial deadlines, and *many* late nights spent bug tracking. I don't mind saying that my involvement with bitpim was a highlight in my time as a developer. There was a time when our project was hot - Verizon and AT&T customer service would recommend us to customers! I could post snarky things on Howard's forums and people would listen! Those days are gone. I haven't heard from Joe in several years, although I'd be interested in knowing what he has been up to all this time. Thus, I suppose the long answer to your question is: "The follow-up version to 1.0.7 is not being actively developed." Best, Sean Burke Former bitpim developer, now lawyer and potted-plant owner. Okay I figured out what the first ten digits of that UID are. They are the UNIX date (most likely the UID is the timestamp of when the record was created, not when the message was recieved. I am still trying to figure out what the six numbers after the decimal are; probably the time itself (just need to figurer out how to format it first. It is probably because of bad formating via my random number generator that the SMS's do not appear in BitPim. Will keep the list updated! |

My guess about UIDs is that they are something like email message uids.. They commonly encode an identifier for the client that originated the message and a timestamp to ensure uniqueness. There's probably an RFC covering this. A possible use of UID would be to identity replies and even threads of messaging. I'd suggest that you test your hypothesis that the original DB can not be read because of the records with invalid UIDs by deleting those suspect records and trying to read the SMS table in Bitpim. Also, you could set some UIDS to NULL in your working test database to see if that causes breakage. Hello, My BitPim database had become currupted somehow in January of this year, and I only recently discovered this when I tried to retreive an old text. When I downloaded my text's from my phone, I could see that the texts were being downloaded as I could read the status bar and it saying that it was retrieving texts from the OUTBOX of my phone. Yes I only had a problem with my SENT text's download to the BitPim database. I feel that my database had somehow became currupted during one of my system restores, and I had not noticed the problem till now. After some research, I found out what sort of database BitPim used and tried to fix the error manually. On, before this, I moved my regular BitPim folder from the My Documents folder and allowed BitPim to create a new database. I then tested it and it downloaded and displayed both incoming and out going message. It appeared that the problem was with the UID field, as a few of the records were NULL, and most the rest were not; most of the sent texts from my phone had not had a UID, but others did, and the ones that did displayed in BitPim. I converted the database to access, then wrote an ASP script to regenerate UID's. I noticed that only the last 9 digits had changed throughout the database. After generating UID's, imported the database back into the BitPim database and tried to access the sms's via BitPim. It did not work... So, this brings me here; could someone explain to me, how the UID's are generated, so that I could repair my database. My ASP script took the first # of the UID and hard fixed it for all records [ 1337112 ]; then it randomly generated two more strings separated by a decimal point; one 3 [ 097 ] digits and the other 6 [ 097414 ] digits. Additionally, for each sms record, I had my script generate a record into the sms__serials table, although, when the sms__serials table was done building it only had 1219 records versus the 1269 in sms table; exactly the same results as when started this show. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Python 2.7 is backwards compatible with Python 2.5 (the only break in Python backwards compatibility is between Python 2.x and Python 3.x), so it should work fine for development. Python 2.5.6 is just the newest version of Python 2.5 (i.e. with any bug/security fixes), so if you do decide to use Python 2.5, that's what you would want. On Ubuntu (or any other Debian-based distro), sudo apt-get build-dep [package name] should get you all of the packages needed to build that package. - Daniel Perelman On Sat, May 12, 2012 at 5:48 PM, Kesten Broughton <sol...@gm...> wrote: > Hi all, > > I have a samsung SCH-U820 "Reality" phone I'd like to get working with > BitPim. > I see that sch-U740 is currently supported and am hoping it will be an > educational experience porting and testing on my phone. > > Following the setup instructions on http://www.bitpim.org/developer.html > I need to install python 2.5 . Hi all, I have a samsung SCH-U820 "Reality" phone I'd like to get working with BitPim. I see that sch-U740 is currently supported and am hoping it will be an educational experience porting and testing on my phone. Following the setup instructions on http://www.bitpim.org/developer.html I need to install python 2.5 . I am running ubuntu 11.10 which has python 2.7 by default and I've added 3.2 for developing on Blender. python.org lists 2.5.6 http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.5.6/ as an available release. Perhaps i'm not digging deep enough, but I don't see 2.5 al punto. Will 2.5.6 work? Once i'm done installation and reading dev-doc, I'd appreciate anyone who has worked on the sch-u___ series getting in touch in case I need to ask questions / compare notes. thanks! kesten -- Kesten Broughton President and Technology Director, Solar Mobile Trailers ke...@so... www.sunfarmkitchens.ca <http://www.sunfarmkitchens.ca> 512 701 4209 |

The best I have been able to do is this paper: http://citeseer.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download;jsessionid=4C2AAB522309266701B91FECE1E0D917?doi=10.1.1.101.1036&rep=rep1&type=pdf I was able to access the file system after installing the LG for the phone via Bitpim and for the lotus, they were a set of vol files under the DB\sysDB folder. It looked like all the vol files functioned together somehow, though I was never able to figure out what data corresponded to the parts of the DBMS the paper said the it should have. There are some .dat files in the DB\schema\Handset folder that are just plain text. Again, I was never able to apply them but some of the syntax shows up in Google searches for other LG phones so this database system may be used on other LG phones too.
